Madeleine (15 years old)

Connor Rhodes' POV

I was checking up on other patients when April walked over to me.
  "Madeleine's results are back; you should look at them." She said, while she kept standing in front of me. I look down, and it was far from the results I was hoping for.
  "What does this mean?" April asked with a worried look.
  "A number of things, but none of them are especially good." I said still looking at the results trying to get them to make sense.

April walked away again, as I just looked at the results completely distraught.
  "Well, that doesn't look good." Nat said as she walked over to me.
  "Nat, can I get a consult really quick?" I asked hoping she could shine some light on the situation.
  "Yeah, sure, what is it about?" She asked and walked over to look me over the shoulder.
  "Can you please make sense of this?" I asked giving her the chart.

She read it over a couple of times, before she looked up at me again.
  "You have to do a bone marrow biopsy, there are clear signs of leukaemia. Do you know if there is any family history?" She asked.
  "No, I don't, and I am too afraid to ask." I stated.
  "Why?" She asked.
  "The patient is Madeleine Halstead." I said shortly before walking over to Maddy's treatment room.

Madeleine Halstead's POV

Connor walked in to my treatment room looking very distraught. It worried me and I squeezed Jay's hand tightly, and Jay returned the favour.
  "What is it?" Will asked worried, obviously also seeing the distraught look on Connor's face.
  "The result of your blood test shows an abnormal number of both red and white blood cells." Connor explained. What the heck is that supposed to mean?

I looked confused, and the same did Jay. Will seemed to get it and by the expression on his face, this was serious.
  "Will?" I asked begging him to speak. He turned to me and his eyes were glassy, he was on the verge of tears. Before he could say anything, Connor explained.
  "We can't be sure before we have done a bone marrow biopsy, but the most likely option is leukaemia." Connor said.

I didn't know what to say. I could have leukaemia. Everybody was looking at me, and I just wanted to hide away.
  "I know this can be overwhelming, but as I said it might be something else. No matter what we should do the biopsy as fast as possible." Connor said, and when I still didn't say anything Will say something instead.
  "Thanks Connor." Will just said, and Connor left us alone.

I zoned completely out, and didn't hear what Will and Jay were saying. My mind just kept going on and on with all the possible scenarios. Am I going to die?
  "Maddy, are you okay?" Jay asked shaking me lightly. I looked at him directly in the eyes, he was worried.
  "Am I going to die?" I asked in a timid voice looking over at Will.

Will looked stunned for a moment, but spoke once I started to tear up a bit.
  "No, no, no, you are not going to die. Let's just start with the biopsy and then take it from there." He said trying to reassure me, but really it didn't help.
  "Let me get Connor so we can get that test done, okay?" Will asked me, and I nodded allowing him to leave.

Jay sat with me and held my hand tight while we waited for Will to return with Connor. It didn't take long before they returned and Connor started explaining the procedure. Before I knew it I was sedated and Connor were performing the procedure.

There was death silent most of the time, until they were done.
  "That's it Maddy you were so brave." Connor said and a few silent tears rolled down my face.
  "April get this to the lab and say you need it stat." Connor said handing April something, and then she walked out.

I got back in to bed in my original position feeling numb the places they had sedated me.
  "Maddy you should rest, maybe try to eat something and then I will be back as soon as I have the results." Connor said before he left. He looked like he waited for a response, but quickly gave up realising he wasn't going to get one.

Will and Jay looked at each other having a silent debate over what to say to me.
  "What do you want to eat?" Will asked after a while, and I just shook my head.
  "Maddy you really need to eat." Jay bargained.
  "I am not hungry." I managed to say.
  "When did you last eat?" Will asked, to which I just shrugged.

Will slammed his hand into the wall, making me jump.
  "I am sorry." Will immediately said once he saw how scared I was.
  "Will, why don't you go and get Maddy a smoothie?" Jay asked softly trying to calm the situation.
  "Sure, do you need anything?" Will asked.
  "No, I am good." Jay answered.

Will left to get the smoothie, and there was an awkward silence for a while were Jay just held my hand comforting.
  "He is just worried; he is not mad at you." Jay comforted.
  "I know, but I am scared Jay." I cried.
  "Me too Maddy, me too." Jay said as we just sat there and I stared into nothing.

Will came back with the smoothie and I drank around half of it before I fell asleep. I fell asleep while Jay stroked my hair, and Will was holding my hand.

Will Halstead's POV

I was holding Maddy's hand as she fell asleep. Jay and I just sat in her room in silence watching her sleep. She looked so peaceful.

After a bit we heard a light knock on the door, it wasn't enough to wake Maddy, but Jay and I turned around. We saw Connor standing in the door, and once we had eye contact Connor shook his head and we both know what that meant.
  "So, where do we go from here?" Jay whispered to Connor, he was very careful to not wake Maddy, but we didn't want to leave the room to speak.
  "Chemo. It looks like we have caught it early so the chances look good." Connor said trying to be encouraging. Jay and I just nodded and he left us to think.

A/N: This is the last part of Really sick, I will probably making a couple of oneshots with Maddy being sick, but right now I have a lot of school work. Because I was stupid enough to choose the IB diploma program.
