"Say... do you and that new girl have something going on?"
"What do you mean?"
"You guys dating?"
"Dude... Whatchu' spewing nonsense here? I'm straight... she's just a friend, why?"
"Oh, nothing... it's just weird how she's always on your shoulder 24/7"
"Isn't that normal for friends?"
"Hmmm... then let me ask you this, are you mean and cold towards her like how you usually are to others?"
"Huh?"
"Well... there were numerous incidents that started those, like this one time, Canary texted you an invitation to come to Leonard's party, it was only left on seen then a few seconds later you blocked the number. The next day, when Canary tried to ask you about it, the new girl stopped her and told her that you said She's being a pain in the ass. Or this one time when the girls tried to invite you to lunch, but the new girl told them you're not interested in spending time with them ever. And the last was when Elias became helped you clean up the sports storage room..."
I stood in front of the book cafe in total disbelief and confusion. I didn't know any of this. Nobody texted me, nobody tried to approach me nor invite me to lunch. Heck, nobody even batted an eye on me. Elias? That nice, outgoing guy? What did I do to him? My heart sank deeper and deeper into the confusion bottling inside me.
"I never...knew those..."
"What?"
"Nobody sent me messages, nor did someone tried to invite me for lunch... And Elias... Sure, he offered to help me but when I called him, he ditched me"
I paused as my words got harder and harder to let out. I felt my heart beating rapidly, much faster than when I was about to get into an accident a while ago. I could feel my hands start to sweat and my body began to run down pale. I stayed silent beside Jonah who is frantically concerned. Just then, I heard a familiar voice from inside the cafe which brought me back to life.
"Hey! The heck are you guys just standing there? come here!!" It was Roseanne. I smiled and nodded at her as I quickly scan the room for a possibility that Alessa might've been here. And to my luck, no sign of her.
"What were you guys up to?"
"She almost got run over by a truck"
"Holy shit!! Are you okay? should we take you to the hospital?"
"I'm fine, no need to worry about me... Oh but, what's Jonah doing here?"
"We three are partners my man!"
Roseanne explained to us that Jonah never had a partner because he was at the nurse's office at the time. At the same time, we took out our notebooks and pens and started brainstorming how we want our presentations to look like, who would speak first, who would take care of the introductions, and the follow-ups. We worked together in such a harmonious way that we were able to openly speak our thoughts about each other's ideas and accept criticisms in a way that could help us broaden our ideas better. It was refreshing.
The ambiance of the cafe, the smell of hot coffee, and of old, rustic books sitting on the bookshelves surrounding us, these 2 people with me, exchanging words and laughter and interests and curiosities; everything made me feel relaxed. It made me feel like I was a normal high school student hanging out with normal high school friends. Those that don't make me feel discomfort. Our conversations made my mind forget about what Jonah told me about Alessa, or what I have known and observed about her behaviors.
