I stare down the 3 new maids, as if they were aliens from another planet. How dare they split my paycheck in half! Liz, the blonde who doesn't know how to play the game with Julie stands before me, an exhausted expression crossing her face. I see Audrey the sweet, standing sheepishly, her cheeks tinted a dark and rosy pink. I'm guessing she met Garrett. And now I see the other maid Cleo, who had just joined the team. Her eyes were narrowed at me, but I didn't care. I knew how to play the game. How to win the most cash.
"Now that I have established a team, everyone will have a designated job and different pays," Ms. Fitzgerald continued, "My most loyal worker Murphy, you will be the servant with the food. You will serve breakfast, which means you have a longer work schedule. You'll be payed $15 a day." 15 whole dollars? This could help my family tremendously! I bounce on my toes excitedly, my long curly ponytail bouncing.
"Liz, you'll be Julie's assistant. She leaves everyday at 8:00 a.m. for swimming and comes home at 2:30. Your work schedule will be from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You'll be payed $10.00 everyday." Liz was less excited, because her ponytail did not bounce.
The list kept on going. Audrey would be Garrett's personal assistant. She was real excited about that, even though she tried to contain herself. Cleo, the girl with her hair looking like a spiky paintbrush in a ponytail would do all the outside work. She seemed to enjoy that, ring able to get a tan. She would also do errands and deliveries. Out of all of us I would get the most to pay, and I was proud of that. After that, Ms. Fitzgerald allowed us to relax around her house all day, but to make sure that all chores were finished. I followed Liz and Audrey up the stairs and into the attic. Cleo followed closely behind me.
We all sat on an old dusty sofa that Audrey found when she was helping Garrett clean it out. She blushed every time she said his name.
"Oh my god, I can't believe I get to be Garrett's personal assistant! I mean, I thought he was hot, and he thought I was hot, so we danced up here and we had a little make-out session." She whispered the last part. I rolled my eyes. This Chinese Audrey girl was a total slut. The girls went on and on about their jobs. I was getting sick of hearing them complaining. I rose up from the sofa.
"I think I'll keep Garrett company in the tool shed," I muttered. Audrey's eyes lit up.
"Let me come with you!" She said, getting up. I shook my head and continued down the attic ladder and out the house.
It was a hot summer day, the perfect time to make some iced tea. The visit would be better if I had a cool drink to cool him off, so I disappeared back to the house and mixed up the cool drink. Plopping 2 ice cubes in the mason jars, I poured the sweet drink into both of the jars and headed off to the tool shed. As I approached it, I heard a soft giggle and the word "kitten." Who was in there with Garrett?
I kicked the door open with my foot to find Audrey sitting in Garrett's lap, kissing his neck. I was so surprised and stiff I dropped the 2 mason jars. They broke and glass shards were everywhere, a few in the shed. Garrett lifted Audrey out of his lap and headed towards me. My mouth went dry, my heart was beating faster.
"Can you, not tell my mom about this?" He asked, rubbing his neck. I placed my hands on my hips, eyeing Audrey who was trying to sneak out of the shed going unnoticed.
"Don't even think about sneaking around, missy," I sass. Audrey rubs her arm.
"I should go," she says and before Ivan stop her, she disappears. I stare deep into his deep brown eyes. Then I kick him in the shin. How dare he have an affair with one of the maids. He jumps up and down on one foot and when he finally recovers I kick him again. He howls.
"I can't believe you, Garrett! After all of the years I've known you, I would never think you would do this. Who's next for a make-out session? Liz? Cleo?" I question. Garrett walks away the shed and I'm close on his heels.
"Whoa, jealous much?" He smirked.
"What?! Why would I be jealous of a slut?" I ask.
"Because you wanna know all the details while trying to act like you're not interested, you named every maid but yourself, and you're blushing." I felt my cheeks. They were indeed, fire truck red. I take a breath and run ahead, gather my things. Liz asked, "Where are you going?" "Home." I adjusted the strap of my messenger bag and left Elves Den Manor. I hop onto the trolley and head to the poverty part of town. I walk a few blocks when I feel a can hit me in the back. It was sharp, and cut me in my back. I turned around to see John.
John was the leader of a gang since he knew what a gang was. He was my age and was always out to get me, knowing I got paid. He was here for his money.
I stared into his dark brown eyes, so dark they could be mistaken for black. On this rare occasion, the corner of his lips were lifted.
"I'm in a good mood today Murphy. Let's not ruin that," he growled. His hand flashed out and I gulped.
"I-I didn't get paid today," I stuttered. His mouth instantly turned back into a frown and he kicked me. I can tumbling to the ground. Then he bested me with the sharp can, the edges sinking into my skin. I but my lip, if I screamed it would be worse.
"I want my money Murphy." After that he took off to an alley. I gathered my things and limped back home, a pain in my side and a cut in my heart.
