jimin arrives at the thrift shop with no specific desire, he was only here to pass time. he enters the building and the security make him remove his backpack and secure it with them. in return the guard gave him a plastic coupon with the number 13 written on it in poor permanent marker ink.
the rays and columns of clothes excited him. he extracts his earphones from his jean pocket and plugs it into his phone, shuffle plays a playlist and walks towards the rails of fancy fabric. the shirts seemed pretty plain and basic. a few were rather uncommon (honestly he didn't find them aesthetic). his feet drag him to the tshirt section.
hm, same kinda vibe.
then he sees a thick paper on the opposite wall screaming 'uni-sexual denim jackets'. thinking it would have something worth paying for, he walks towards it humming the song playing. the jackets here were genuinely good looking, some had extravagant designs on the backs, fan arts, animals or even embroidery. in the ocean of denim jackets, he gets a glimpse of a jacket with fake cheap diamonds studded on the shoulder pads. they were fake but they stood out and seemed like a bold statement piece.
faline enters the thrift shop with her water bottle and phone in hand. she had just made an exhausting trip to the gym. faline was reuniting with her friends this weekend. all her friends came from the bouje families who'd pay for anything the girls wanted. most of her friends group were arrogant and toxic. however, since they were childhood friends it wouldn't hurt to pay them a visit.
thus, the need to buy something that looks expensive but is inexpensive. she heads for the dress section, in high hopes. scrolling through the dresses she concludes that they're all cotton and common cheap material, crashing her hopes. she needed something like silk, satin, diamonds, pearls, etc. any clothing piece in these categories would do.
she saw a poster advertising 'unisexual"denim jackets' on the adjacent wall.
a jacket should do well, i can pair my minimalist clothes with it.
the things you have to do to keep up with the toxic beauty standards of the society is sickening. faline walks to the racks, one by one reviews the pieces. just then, a sparkly jacket catches her eye. it wasn't completely loaded with diamonds just the shoulders, making it look chic and maybe just a tad bit stylish. it would do well for the reunion.
she extends her arm to the hanger and at the same time a guy reaches out too, from the opposite side of the rack. their hands touch each other and the jacket. in a cliche story, they would instantly pull their hands away and be shy and smile like idiots. but here, in the real life, both wanted the jacket. hence the war of the denim jacket initiates.
"excuse me, i touched the jacket first," says faline.
she looks up at the man, she was impressed. his eyes made moon like crescents behind clear glasses. his basic tshirt reflected his face's glow. he wore a thin silver chain and a black mask, along with twin piercings on one ear. the man seemed to have come straight out of the Vogue boyfriend edition, a copy that would be limited edition as well.
"but i saw it first miss," his muffled voice chimed.
"i need it more than you. let go. now" she threatened.
"no, the jacket is mine." he says lowering his mask with a tiny hand but also tugging the garment towards himself with the other tiny hand.
"no, im taking this. its MINE." she said emphasizing on the mine also tugging it towards herself.
"miss please let go. i saw this first and its mine." jimin said trying to keep calm. rage brewed under in his voice.
"i touched it first though," faline said eyeing the arrangement of their hands, where her hand was below jimin's. after jimin noticed the hands, faline smirked assuming she had won the battle of the denim jacket.
both narrowed their eyes at each other, clearly indicating disgust. for god knows how long, they stared through squeezed eyes waiting for the other to let go. every few seconds, they would alternatively tighten their grips on the hanger asserting supremacy.
"i guess its decided then, im keepi-" faline started but jimin's actions made her cut the sentence.
jimin snatched the jacket from the hanger and rushed towards the billing counter. apparently he won this war.
"asshole." faline mouthed.
there wasn't anything else to buy thus she decided to leave the shop. she reached her car in the parking lot and sat in the driver's seat trying to find a solution to her social fashion issue. unable to come up with anything she started texting her friends to cancel the plan. while texting, an employee from the thrift shop comes running towards her car. the amiable lady had no expressions except for being tired of running. panting, she reached the car and faline read her name tag.
'ruby jane' it said.
"uhh how may i help you ruby or jane, whichever one comes first."
"its ruby," she said taking deep breaths, " a man named jimin left this for you."
"oh i think you've got the wrong person, i dont know any jimin."
"of course you do idiot, he was the guy you rebelled with for a jacket. i saw it, mind you. now take this bag and let me go." ruby said thrusting the plastic bag through the car window onto your lap and walking back inside to complete her shift.
faline opened the bag and finds the diamond studded denim jacket along with a note. she examines the jacket's originality and then proceeds to read the note. it said:
you said you needed it more. in my opinion, you look beautiful with or without the jacket. dont worry ive already paid for it. take care of that voice of yours, its soothing and distracting at the same time. it distracts me from your eyes. id love to hear more of your voice, just without the threatening.
