New kid

New year, new start. Or so everyone keeps saying. I'm just lucky that I've made it to January without killing anyone.

Where to start? My school's full of twats; seems like a good start. Most of them are the 'populars' who would pass as being umpalumpa's with the amount of fake tan they use. Then there's the guys, who are like jungle animals most of the time.

That's why I'm incredibly lucky to have my little group of friends.

Alex is the one that everyone goes to with their troubles. Her full name's Alexis but she'd kill you if you said it to her face.

then there's Lauren. Laurens the one who needs guidance. She's always going and making stupid decisions and winding herself in trouble with her parents.

Lets just say, Summer's the quiet one. I don't know her as well as the others. she seems nice though?

I walked into my drama class with Lauren as usual to find a new kid in Laurens place. Before we had time to question him, Mr Harrison came over to us.

''I've sat josh here because I know you two are mature enough not to complain. Lauren, could you sit in the spare seat behind?'' He said, more of a demand than questioning.

I sat down on the uncomfortable small chair and got my books out of my bag.

''I'm Lola by the way'' I said, before the lesson started. He smiled a friendly smile but didn't say anything.

Mr Harrison moaned on and on about stage directions and I sat daydreaming, as usual. I was generally a bright person so I didn't need half of the talks he gave about the subject.

I felt my phone buzz in the pocket of my hollister shorts. Ours was one of the only English school's that didn't require a uniform, thankfully. I discreetly pulled it out of my pocket and checked the message.

from: mum

I'm at a meeting tonight so I'll be staying in the hotel. There's money on the counter for food. be good. xx

Great, an empty house to myself. My house was already huge and it felt lonely when my mum was there, never mind when I'm alone. My mum wanted to move into a huge apartment in the centre of town, it was nice and modern but it just didn't feel cozy.

I slid my phone back into my pocket just as we were told about our new project.

''right, I'm pairing you up. Lola, considering your original partner, Lucas, is ill, you can work with Josh.'' I turned to him and smiled and he shyly looked away.

''I'll hand you your assignment on the way out. Just remember, this counts as 35% of your grade for the year.''

We walked out of the class and studied the sheet we were given. Our assignment was to create tension in a romantic piece lasting for 5 minutes. Trust us to get the romantic one. Lauren got to have a dramatic death. So not fair.

''Josh, why don't you sit with us at dinner? we can figure out when and where we can meet?'' I asked. He nodded and tagged along behind us. He really doesn't talk much. strange...
