The next morning, Alcina was sleeping on top of Melania, both in a very deep sleep. The room was a mess, bedding and clothes scattered everywhere, and a man's body drained of blood laying on the floor close to the bathroom. No less than five empty bottles of wine standing on the table in front of the fireplace. It's still the wee hours of the morning, the birds just singing their wake up songs and the sun, not yet out. A peaceful scene, lovers asleep after a busy night. The serenity was soon interrupted by a vibrating noise, accompanied by what Alcina Dimitrescu would only describe as 'an ungodly noise'. Melania's phone rang, her ringtone set as Wait and Bleed by Slipknot, as she once told Alcina, who didn't understand what she had meant. Melania jolted awake, last night's wine still occupying her head.
"What is that?" Alcina complained about the noise, rolling over, off Melania and shoving a pillow over her head.
"Calm down, it's just my phone. Not a demon, love." Melania said, receiving a growl as an answer to her sarcasm. Melania rolled over and reached for the phone.
"Hello?"
"Melania, it's Karl."
"Karl? What's wrong?" she was immediately worried, and woke Alcina with a shove.
"Nothing serious. Yet. Jack made a move, tried to attack Daniela-" he couldn't finish.
"We're on our way." Melania and Alcina said at the same time before jumping up.
"Wait!" Karl began, but it was too late, Melania hung up. They moved quickly, not bothering to clean up. Alcina would send maidens later to come and clean up. Within ten minutes they were dressed, washed and outside with the horses.
"My love. Stay calm, everything is alright." Melania said, sensing Alcina's struggle to stay calm. She didn't answer, just gave her a kiss on the cheek.
"That man... What shall we do?" Alcina asked, almost forgetting about the man still shackled in the cottage.
"Shit! I'll deal with it." Melania said in frustration. She quickly ran inside, draining him of his blood within seconds. She ran back out, wiping the blood from her mouth. They jumped on the horses and raced towards the castle. Fiara and Teras's hooves heavily hitting the cobblestone path beneath them, making a noise similar to roaring thunder. The Countess and Baroness' long black hair flowing behind them. Racing through the village, the people had to jump out of the way to avoid being trampled by giant horses. They finally made it to the castle, Karl made the right decision and stood outside waiting for them, Donna was standing next to the twins, and Bela, Cassandra and Daniela embracing each other. They stopped the horses in front of the entrance to the castle, not bothering to take them to the stables. The vampires quickly jumped off and ran to the girls.
"You know, you two are such fuckin' drama queens. Stefan! Come get the horses." Karl said, the stable boy came running seconds later.
"Tell me what happened, Karl." Melania asked as she watched Alcina inspect the three girls.
"Very early this morning, that man broke into Daniela's room. He didn't get far, uh, there was someone with Daniela..." Karl trailed off as all eyes fall on Daniela. She blushed immediately, looking at her feet.
"Daniela? Use your words, draga mea." Alcina said. Melania saw Daniela's eyes flash to one of the twins and back, before Alcina could notice. She smiled, immediately realizing what Karl meant.
"Why are you smiling?" Alcina asked, Melania just smirked. Bela gave Daniela a nudge of encouragement towards Alcina, before her eyes flickered to Cassandra, which didn't go unnoticed. Melania was surprised, but amused nonetheless. She smiled with love in her heart for her daughters. Karl gave himself a face-palm, flabbergasted at the fact that Alcina still didn't pick up what was happening.
"The twins tried disappearing, but Melania gave them a look.
"Will someone please, tell me what's going on?" Alcina snapped, apparently the only one not aware.
"Well, mother, uh, I was with, uh, Alexandra last night..." Daniela trailed off, watching her mother anxiously. Before Alcina could even register what Daniela just said, Cassandra cleared her throat.
"And I was with Luca..." she mumbled. Everyone held their breath, waiting for the Lady of the Castle to react.
"Tell me what happened." she simply said, her expression unreadable.
"We were sleeping, mother, when Jack tried to attack me. Alexandra did something to him, I'm not sure what, but she saved me. When Jack started screaming, Karl came and finished him off." Daniela gulped. Alcina stood up, walked over to the twins and kneeled down to look them in the eyes. They both looked terrified, visibly shaking.
"Is this true? Don't lie now. I'll know if you do." she said in a stern voice, her eyes narrowing.
"It's true, my lady." Alexandra said. Suddenly Alcina hugged her, so sudden that the girl yelped at surprise. She almost screamed, but soon relaxed when she realized what was going on. She didn't hug back, not knowing if it was polite or not. Alcina soon grabbed Luca as well, hugging both of them.
"Thank you for saving my daughter, Alexandra." she said softly.
"Have you gone soft, dear sister?" Karl frowned, not knowing this softer side of his big sister. Melania smiled proudly.
"But if either one of you hurt my daughters, I'll gut you and hang you in the trees by your innards. Am I clear?" her voice changed so quickly, from warm and soft, to freezing cold.
"Ah there she is." Karl laughed, slapping his knee. She let them go from her embrace, and Daniela and Cassandra both hugged their mother, grateful for her decision. Bela walked over to Donna and wrapped her arm around Donna, proud that her mother had learned her lesson.
"They will remain our handmaidens until further notice. I love you, my darlings."
"We love you too, mother." they said happily. Unfortunately, their happiness is short lived.
