He seems to be calculating what the safe ground is around the land mine of our past.
He was always so smart.
So he goes for the safest, "Same."
I wait for anything; more words, more accusations, rage, anger or sadness but he gives me nothing. He stands there watching me and I can't help but watch him back.
He sighs, runs a hand through his hair, but he doesn't get to say whatever it is he was about to say.
"Edward, there you are! Ben needs you." Tanya calls, breaking whatever bubble we're in.
He nods but turns back to me.
"Can we talk? Tomorrow?" He asks, and I must give him an answer because he tells me goodnight, and I watch as Tanya follows him in a little too closely.

The door closes, and from his reaction, he's surprised to see me.
"Hey." He walks over, drops his bag where it usually goes. He stands at the bar, watching me for a minute.
"You look pretty. How was your night?" He walks to the fridge, grabs a bottle of water.
It's 2 am. And Tia made me go to a bar with her. I complained about Edward's schedule. His shifts are always long and he never makes it home when he promises.
I don't want to be resentful or angry, so I let it all go after the third night I cooked dinner the this week and he didn't show.
I know all the work he's doing is fantastic.
"I just miss him. I miss us." I tell Tia, downing my fourth glass of wine.
"So be you again. Talk to him, babe. Tell him" She looks at me with her bright blue eyes, always so perceptive. She has become my best friend since moving here, completely taking on the big sister and best friend role I miss from Rose.
I scoff, thinking it isn't that simple.
"You're his wife. For better or worse." She points a finger at me.
She's right though; we never had to try to be happy, before. We always said what was on our minds, never holding back.
"It was a good night." I answer, getting up from the couch.
I don't remember the last conversation we had that wasn't over the phone, and I don't remember the last time we touched each other without it being an accident.
I grab his hand, pulling him to me.
"How do I miss you so much when you're right here?" I ask, not feeling so brave anymore.
"I miss you, so much." I say, and I can't look at him.
He lifts my chin with a finger and I see his smile for the first time in days.
"I'm here, baby. I'm right here." He says, pulling me to him.
A/n: the next few chapters will be a bit longer.
