Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Barbara is preparing a tray of tea and food for the guests. Now beside the hob, she pours out some biscuits onto a plate and wraps up the packet. We see a black arm of some kind poking into her hair. Barbara has noticed it and turns around to find out what it was. She yells out in fright, and we are revealed as to what frightened her – a Zarbi! It backs away and sounds confused and frightened felt noises, hurrying to the other side of the kitchen in a spin.
Barbara:
Ian! Ian!
The Zarbi crashes into the wall and some items that are around the kitchen. Ian, Dodo, and the Doctor all rush into the surprise of seeing the Zarbi.
Doctor:
Goodness, gracious! A Zarbi!
It continues spinning around nervously in a panicked state of mind.
Ian:
What on earth is it doing here? How did it get into the house?
Barbara:
The back door is locked, and we would have heard it coming through the front entrance.
The Doctor approaches it.
Ian:
Careful Doctor.
Doctor:
Oh it's alright dear boy, I know what I'm doing.
The Doctor shows the Zarbi his ring on his hand. Showing the shinning blue side of it, he carefully moves his hand from side to side to help keep the Zarbi controlled and calm. The creature begins to panic less and less. Its movements are slower and begins to sway slowly before it stops moving. The Doctor continues to sway his hand from side to side for a little while before he finally stops.
There. I've hypnotized him to keep him calm.
Dodo:
What is this thing anyway? It's like it's a giant ant.
Ian:
These were one of the beings we met back on the planet Vortis. Barbara, what happened when you were in here?
Barbara:
Well, I was just preparing us a snack when I had my back turned preparing the biscuits. I felt something touch my neck and I turned around and it was a Zarbi.
Ian:
Doctor, you were saying something about a cloud you went through, and how the TARDIS said that there was nothing it could find there to be wrong?
Doctor:
Are you suggesting that this white cloud brought this fellow here to Earth?
Ian:
It seems to be the only explanation. Perhaps it was that misty cloud that controlled the TARDIS here – and still could be in control.
Barbara:
But remember, when we first arrived on Vortis, the TARDIS was being controlled by the Animus. It might have been able to return and grab the TARDIS and control it. And that would have meant it the Zarbi might be under its control again.
Doctor:
So it must mean that parasite could be in control of my TARDIS. Well, the only thing I think we can do left now is fight it off like we did last time.
Ian:
With the power of light.
Doctor:
Yes dear boy. The TARDIS has plenty of strong forms of light aboard we can use against it.
Barbara:
We could be under the control of the Animus again if we go back.
Doctor:
That is a risk we will have to take my dear. We have no other option. Besides, we have to take this Zarbi back to his home planet. We can't leave him here on Earth for him to be let loose under possession, can we? Hmph?
Ian:
You're right, Doctor. Something is very wrong. And we're going to have to find out what is wrong and stop it.
Doctor:
That's the spirit, Chesterton! Risky, but we must try.
Dodo:
Would somebody please explain to me what on earth is happening?
Ian:
We'd better explain on the way, Dodo. Come on.
Ian, Barbara, and Dodo leave. The Doctor stays and ushers the Zarbi out of the house. In the hallway, Dodo asks...
Dodo:
How are we going to get him into the TARDIS without anyone noticing?
Barbara:
Erm, we'll just say it's a costume.
They leave. Ian has keys to the house, and they leave the door open for the Doctor to guide the Zarbi forward. It heads through the door with difficulty. Now, they head for the TARDIS...
