I just sat there.

Shocked.

Scared.

Eyes wide and mouth snapped shut, immitating that of a mute person.

"Is who me talking to!"

I was too dumbfounded to even muster a mumble and I felt tear stinging my eyes, threatening to fall.

"Look here Samantha", She grappled my chin in a tight pinch that made me wince in pain.

Pointing a Finger at me, she warned," Mi try mi best fi send you and Yuh brother a school so don't disappoint me child."

Guilt washed over me. Unconsciously Trying to bow my head in shame with the restriction of assault sitting still on my chin.

And I couldn't look her in the face.

"Look Pon me good good daughter mi send a school and come hear seh she gone out wid man!-".

Wait- what?

Immediately getting into defence mode, I stated solemnly, "Mommy mi never go out with anybody".

Narrowing her eyes at me, she paused" So why mi hear seh Patchy bwoy (Virgo's Father) bring Yuh home Inna him car, eeh? Is shame Yuh waah bring down Pon mi gyal!"

She gripped my chin harder.

"Mommy is him a the person that bring me home when ma foot did sprain".

Her features softened a bit as if the truth in what I just said settled on her good nerves.

She sighed and released my chin. Taking my hand into hers almost apologetically.
"Samantha".

"Yes mommy".

"I don't waah Yuh mix and mingle with boys like them...... Mi send you and Yuh brotha go School fi Tek in unu education, not fi Tek in no man. And man like them nuh have anything fi offer you. The world naa run weh and man caah done. We you have is a opportunity that only few Inna my time did have. Don't waste it".

"Yes mommy", I said softly.

This wasn't the first time my mother had addressed me in such a way that made me question my life choices at times.
