Chapter 5: The Jealous Type
River
I sit at the head table between my mother Renee and my grandmother Rosa. You have to be very careful in a spot like this; one wrong move and they fly down on you like hawks to a helpless rabbit.
My eyes are fixed on Holly who sits across the square at her own table, talking with Tyler much too happily for my liking. Desiree and David are on the other side of her, hands linked while they eat. They've been so absorbed in each other since they mated a few months ago. I don't understand the whole infatuation they share, but a big part of me now wants to have that with Holly.
"A little bird told me something today."
My mother's voice catches my attention, and I look over to her in question.
"Yes?" I ask, my tone flat as I prompt her to continue. She smiles while lifting some salad to her mouth.
"This little bird had some very intriguing information...Something about how you have a girl staying in the house right now, that she's new to the pack, and she's rumoured to be your mate!" She practically squeals the last word and I drop my knife in surprise.
What the fuck! How did she find out so fast?
"Give me the name of this bird and I'll deal with it myself." I grumble threateningly, and she swats me on my shoulder. Her touch is like a feather against a wall. I barely feel it.
"Oh River, stop. It was your sister. You can't blame her." She says, and I snap my head over to the left, past my mother to see Sam watching us with a wide smirk on her face.
I should've known.
"Sam..." I say, knowing full well she's been listening.
"What?" My little sister looks to me innocently, her brown eyes wide. "I came over to ask you about the arrangements for tonight and well...I saw you two in the kitchen having some kind of heated argument. I heard the word 'mate' mixed in there a few times and then ran like hell before you noticed." She snickers before popping a piece of meat into her mouth.
Samantha's always meddled in my business since we were kids. From wrecking my layout of toy soldiers to now, running off and spilling fragile information to my parents like it's the next hot news story. And in this situation, it could very well spread like wildfire. Werewolves love a good piece of gossip.
"Oh! Do you mean the sweet girl who came by my tent? She's new!" my Grandma Rosa perks up at the conversation, and I turn to look at her, wondering how the hell Holly's presence has somehow become to known to my whole immediate family. "Oh, she was a delightful little thing. Has River mentioned how beautiful she is? My, my, if that is the girl, he is lucky to be mated with her." She gushes across me to my mother and sister.
My mother gasps with excitement. "Oh Mom, please tell me who she is! Oh, I can't wait to see what our grandpup's look like if she and River both have great genes!"
My mouth falls open, aghast, and I hear Sam laugh loudly from the other side of my mom.
If she wasn't protected by my mom right now, I'd simply reach over and put her in a headlock until she promised to stop messing with my life. Little brat probably planned this seating arrangement so her safety was guaranteed.
