~EPILOGUE~

10 1 1

Sakura twined her tail with Grasshopper's. This was the day. Heat overwhelmed her, but as was to be expected in a hatchery. Her ears pricked up as a loud crack split the frustrating silence. She stared at both of the eggs until she spotted a large crack on one of them. She gasped and pointed out the crack to Grasshopper. Grasshopper yelped quietly but very happily.

A small talon gripped one of the edges of the eggshell where the crack had split the shell of the egg. The small talon was dark green, and looked ripply. Not exactly how she had expected a Leafwing-Forestwing hybrid to look, but that was just the talon!

A tiny dragonet squeezed out of the small hole it had made. Immediately when the dragonet tumbled clumsily out, Sakura knew that this was the most perfect dragonet she could have ever asked for. She grabbed the tiny dragonet that sprawled out across her palm. This dragonet would be queen.

The dragonet was dark green, with a frilly webby-mane that resembled Grasshopper's mane without the spines. The mane was a dark magenta, and she had a few diamond-shaped yellow scales and piercing yellow eyes. The texture of the dragonet's scales was sort of ripply, like it was trying to be smooth but wanted to be bark textured like most Forestwings.

While Sakura was admiring her dragonet, she missed the fact that her other egg had silently cracked. Grasshopper tapped Sakura's shoulder with his tail and pointed out the second egg's crack. Sakura's eyes were already glittering with happiness, and now her SECOND dragonet was hatching.

A little dragonet's head poked out of the crack. A few pieces of eggshell were stuck on the dragonet's head, and she shook her little head adorably and the pieces flew away. She grabbed both edges of the shell where her head opened the crack and pulled the egg apart. The dragonet tumbled out, standing but very wobbly. Sakura giggled. She placed the first dragonet down and picked up the second.

The dragonet was a pretty pink-red shade and had smooth scales like Sakura's. She had Grasshopper's back spines and webbing, which were yellow and pastel yellow-green. She had curly horns like Grasshopper's, and flowers on the end of her tail and wingtips, like Sakura's signature wingtip and tail tip flowers.

Sakura set her second dragonet down next to her first and watched them begin to play and wrestle. Sakura smiled. She immediately knew their names and leaned against Grasshopper's shoulder, looking up at him.

"The first dragonet is Amorphophallus, and the second dragonet is Gloriosa," Sakura smiled at the names. Both were names of flowers; they weren't Forestwings, but they weren;t Leafwings. Amorphophallus and Gloriosa were special.

Amorphophallus had pinned Gloriosa down and Sakura frowned. She inspected her dragonets, and pulled them closer to her and Grasshopper with her tail. If Wisteria had lived, she wouldn't be queen right now. But if Qisteria had lived, then Amorphophallus and Gloriosa might not be here today because of laws and rules and traditions. But because Wisteria died, Sakura, the second oldest daughter, had become queen.

And what if Wisteria had lived, but she had become queen anyways instead? Did the eldest always have to become queen? What if Amorphophallus and Gloriosa would end up with different destinies than royals were taught since they could speak and walk and fly, that the eldest daughter is always the next queen when the current queen dies...?
