AFTER DROPPING VANESSA off with our grandmother, I headed to the Cade house to retrieve my jacket and to get Nick.

Whenever I pulled up at their house, my phone started ringing. I picked it up from the cup holder, and I looked to see Maya calling me.

I don't know why I haven't blocked her yet. I think it's because if I do block her, that means that it's official over.

And I don't know if I have the strength to deal with that pain again.

I answered the call before placing the phone to my ear.

"What do you want?" I asked her, turning my car engine off.

"Brent, hey," Maya replied, softly, before sniffling.

My heart twitched at her crying, but I didn't say anything.

"I didn't know who else to call. You told me that if I need to talk about something I could call you," she continued after clearing her throat.

"That was before we broke up," I reminded her, making her sniffle even more.

"I know. I know, but Brent it's so bad. My mother told me that I was a disappointment because I didn't look like her friend, Alice, daughter. Brent, she looked at me like I was nothing to her. How can a mother do that to their own daughter?"

Maya started crying now, and I said,"Maya, I'm sorry that your mother did that. You are beautiful just the way you are, you know that."

"I do, but I'm never going to meet her expectations of this perfect daughter. What can I do about that?"

I didn't respond because I didn't know the answer to that to be completely honest.

"God, I need you here, Brent. You are my anchor, and I don't know what I would do without you."

Anger and hurt hit me like a truck, and I started to scowl.

"Well, you should have thought about that before you cheated on me."

Then I pressed the end button before she could respond. I know it was a shitty move, but I'm so angry right now.

I picked my phone up once more, and I called Nick. I know I'm outside of his house, but I can't talk to him with everybody around.

He picked up on the second ring, and I asked,"Are you alone?"

I heard a door shut before he answered,"Now I am. What's wrong?"

"Maya just called me, Nick. She was telling me something that happened between her and her mother," I answered, resting my head on the steering wheel.

"Okay and?"

"And then she said that I was her anchor and she didn't know what she would do without me like we are still dating! She is the one who cheated on me, but she keeps acting like nothing happened!"
