CHAPTER THIRTY ❛ the aftermath ❜
𝒇𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒌𝒔 𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓
CINDY BERMAN'S FUNERAL WAS ONE OF THE WORST PARTS. There was a part of Billie that blamed herself for the tears of Cindy's relatives. As she watched the casket be lowered into her resting place, her chest hurt with guilt. She never treated Cindy the way Tommy wanted her to. And she hated herself for it. There was nothing she could do about it now. She couldn't apologise to Cindy for how she treated her. And she couldn't apologise to Tommy for not trying harder.
Billie felt out of place at the funeral. She's sure they were trying to be discreet, but she couldn't ignore the way people looked at her. Nick sat with her at the back of the church and obeyed her wish to stay out of people's way as much as possible. She could hardly focus on the service. A part of her knew it was the right thing to be there; celebrating Cindy's life ─ being there was a respectful thing to do. She knew she wasn't acting as much of a moral support shoulder to cry on, but it was polite to attend, right? The other part of her, however, regretted ever showing her face. She was surprised they didn't turn her away at the door. She supposed that's not quite how the ethics of a funeral works.
