Present
I'm just another promise you couldn't keep Iyan...she had laughed in pain, her last words before she drew in her last breath in- it jolted Iyan from his sleep, he was still on his way to New York.
Peace and calm were far from Iyan this night, it was going to be a torturous one he had thought as he sat on his private jet and it was no lie. Warren, his secretary had been with him the whole time, he asked Warren to get at the back of the plane, Iyan had been in no mood for company now.
His eyes were red and puffy from the lack of sleep and his mind numb from her thoughts, she had never gone away from his mind but it felt today, he had actually absorbed the reality of her death. She was indeed gone and she would never come back. He recalled the night she had died in his arms, feeble and weak, barely any energy left to fight at all.
The night she had told him about Scott...
His knuckles turned white as he thought of Scott again, he couldn't wait to be in New York.
Yvonne woke up to the sun already being out since hours. Someone was ringing the doorbell since a long time. Still half-asleep, she got up and reached the door clumsily.
"Hello dear, Oh my, I must have woken you up," it was Mrs Irene. She was a frail old lady who lived next door to Yvonne. Nothing went unnoticed from her eyes, she was quite a gossip but Yvonne liked her anyway, she had a very pleasant personality.
"No no, that's alright," Yvonne smiled at her, her hair was messy and eyes a bit puffy, "Come on in, would you like to have tea?"
"Oh no dear, I just wanted to tell you that I actually have to rush to the pension office but there might be a tenant coming, just let him know I'll be back by 3," she requested.
"Or you could just call him?"
"You know how much I hate this new digital world of phones and emails! Why can't people write letters anymore? You know how romantic it used to be back when men dropped anonymous letters, they had feelings! These mails and texting you youngsters do is so robotic!" she exaggerated.
Yvonne made a small laugh out of that, "I'll keep an eye if anyone's coming," she reassured Mrs Irene.
"Thank you dear," she leaned forward to kiss Yvonne on the cheek, that's one thing Yvonne really liked about her, she was so English, she reminded her about her mother. Yvonne's mother like Mariella, had died when she had been 17.
After Mrs Irene left, Yvonne came back in to realize her small bag and her heels from last night were still lying in the living room. She turned on her coffee pot to boil and meanwhile, cleaned up the mess. Finishing that, as she was pouring coffee into her mug, her mind got back to what had really happened with Scott.
Thinking back to last night, it felt like a dream to her. She thought about what had happened and then one name came to her mind, Mariella... The bitter words came back.
You are just not what I was looking...
A stark pain arose in her heart and it stung like a thousand bees had bitten; Scott's words echoed in her ears, she was not even in love with Scott now and yet it stung like hell. She had loved him for far too long...but nothing mattered to her now, he did not matter to her anymore, she had fully convinced herself of that. But what he had done to her life mattered and she would make sure he realizes what he has done.
The anger, the frustration she had felt, all came back to her at once.
It was not Anna who had destroyed her marriage like she had earlier thought, it was probably not Scott either. The only one responsible for that was Mariella...
