My eyes sat on the screen in front of us hoping the red targets would all disappear. But nothing disappeared as the countdown started, "Firing in, three, two, one."
"I'm going to hell, fuck." I whispered expecting those to be my last words as the countdown ended. But as zero hit all the targets disappeared from the screen. They all at once exited as if they were never there to start with.
"Where are the targets? Where are the targets?" The voice from the control center yelled out, but the relief I was experiencing tuned it out completely.
I turned around to Fury who shared a relieved look, and then to Natasha who'd taken off her foe feelings. The fear we all had were in her eyes, but she shared the same smile Fury and I had.
"Okay, Cap, get out of there."
The map popped up with only three targets now: The helicarriers. The very things that got us all into this mess in the first place. The weapons that were going to kill us, were now about to destroy themselves.
"Fire now"
My smile changed to a confused look, "Steve this wasn't the plan!" I yelled back into the comms. "Steve, please don't."
"Do it! Do it now!"
"Steve, get out of there!" I yelled into the comms. "What is going on?" Natasha asked me, only having one channel in her comms.
I turned around staring out the window, looking at the Helicarriers. "Steve isn't clear, but ordered Hill to fire."
Both Natasha and Fury's victoried smiles left and they joined me in looking out the window. We all watched as the Helicarriers fired at one another. No one knew what to say. This was truly the end of Shield. But also the end of Hydra. The end of every lie I'd been told. But it was also the start of a new era. One to rebuild Shield on.
Pierce interrupted the symbolic silence in the room. Reminding the three of the Hydra leader still alive. "What a waste."
"Are you still on the fence about Rogers' chances?" Natasha dryly asked.
"Time to go, councilwoman." Pierce gestured for Natasha to start moving. Despite having complete control of her, he still didn't touch her. "This way, come on. You're gonna fly me out of here." Apparently she reminded him, Steve wouldn't leave Pierce in tact. Meaning he needed an exit.
And this was one of the things that Natasha couldn't exactly deny unless she had a death wish. And she clearly didn't or she would have had the two inch sternum whole moments ago. And Pierce's whole speech about my life just solidified that I couldn't do anything to stop him.
But Natasha, she was always many steps ahead of us all. And Fury knew that as well. "You know, there was a time I would have taken a bullet for you," he attempted to stall and by Natasha a bit more time. And it worked, as he walked behind Natasha and didn't pay any attention to what she was doing.
I formed a sly grin when I noticed Natasha holding her signature weapon. Widow Bites. And what she had planned out all added up. A small disc that holds a strong electrical current like a taser. Just much worse. But enough to fry the control of the pin that was giving Pierce control of her actions.
She went down immediately after activating it, the pin loudly sizzling confirming its uselessness. Pierce stared at his phone in fear when he realized he had no leverage over us. I quickly picked the gun back up and aimed it.
Two gunshots hit the man's chest, one after the other. But two guns smoked.
Fury had grabbed the gun he had dropped and shot at Pierce just as I did. Pierce fell through the glass wall behind him and it came down excessively loud. Forcing me to cringe. "Yeah, you deserved that man." I mumbled out.
