Waking up, I got ready for work in silence. My Dad was still here and I was officially not on speaking terms with anyone. I liked it this way. I left the house before anyone could say something.
After relocating, the hair shop had a different address. While walking I began to recognise the roads and shops nearby, but I put it to the back of my mind and continued. Unusually, the Sun was out, bright and blinding. My choice of clothing completely opposed this; a strappy top under a jumper, jacket and coat.
I was drenched with sweat when I finally arrived.
Rapidly, I yanked off everything but my top of course, and hurried behind the counter, I couldn't be late on the first day.
"Mornin', did you run here?" My boss said while throwing her head back in laughter.
Did I really look that bad?
"Oh God...give me a mirror."
She handed me a musty mirror and walked away, sighing in amusement.
I peered closely. I looked a state. My hair was supposed to be pulled back in a bun but now most of it had flown out and stayed static in the air. Sweat continued to drip from my forehead and my eye bags were darker than ever.
Before customers arrived I quickly snatched a pair of gold hoops and slid them in. I swiped on some lip gloss and finally looked half-decent. I didn't even bother with my course hair, it would take more than just re-tying.
Taking a long sip of the now, warm water, the bell at the door rang. A customer was here. My first customer. I took a deep breath. Here goes...WHAT! Diego casually strolled towards me with a grin spreading across his face.
"Yo."
After the shock went away I realised how I terrible I looked and attempted to smooth down my hair.
"Um hey, what are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be at work?"
Seeing his face reminded me of that night, and we hadn't talked since.
"Nah, well yeah, I was taking a call and saw you while walking past. Didn't know you worked here, so thought I should say hey real quick."
So he remembered that night, and me and my face...even though it looked a mess right now. He even thought about me enough to want to come and say hi. I don't want to read into this too much, it's nothing until he says something.
"Oh well I only started work here today. Um about that night I- "
"Why do you look a mess?" He teased.
I tutted.
"Excuse me but I practically ran here, take your judgements elsewhere."
I tried to joke along but I was mostly annoyed. Of all people, he had to be the one to point out something I didn't want to be pointed out. Oblivious to my annoyance, he laughed harder.
"Oh my god your hair as well...I can't...breathe." He wheezed through heavy breaths mixed with laughter.
I rolled my eyes and acted careless. He stumbled towards me and ruffled my hair, ruining it even more.
"Man if I had my phone right now." He half laughed half spoke, slapping his hand on the counter.
It can't be that terrible. Or did he just want to make me feel worse than I already did. I pushed him away and he looked up at me and sniggered.
"Ah you are funny without doing anything you know, I gotta go now though, catch you later, dummy."
Casually, he exited the shop, still chuckling as if he had achieved something while being here. I stood there stupidly, trying to work out what had happened. Did he just address me as dumb?
I had no time to process this as another customer walked in. My first, actual customer. I admired her as she walked. Opposed to me she actually looked pretty. I sighed, why was this day already dragging?
She grabbed a few items, treating them more violently that I would like, and slammed them on the counter. Although confused about her unnecessary violence, I asked,
"Just those?"
She flicked her eyes up and glared at me as if I had asked the most idiotic question.
"Obviously if I wanted anything else I would've bought it here to pay for it." She stated while rolling her eyes.
I arched one eyebrow to question her behaviour but kept my overall composure. This was my first day and I wasn't going to ruin it.
"Hurry up I have places to be unlike you, working this job."
Her emphasis on 'this' made me cock my head to the side.
"What do you mean, this job?" I said flatly so she couldn't accuse me of being rude.
She smirked and said nothing more.
I hurriedly paid for the items in an attempt to get rid of her quickly. She snatched them out of my hand before I could give them to her, and stared at me, longer than necessary.
"You're welcome, I guess."
"I don't thank people like you."
Who does she think she is? I know some customers are rude but this was just plain disrespect.
She strutted out the shop and stole a glance at me, before flicking her hair and muttering something under her breath.
To my surprise, Diego was also standing outside...it seemed like he was waiting for her. Due to the door being left open, I could hear most parts of their conversation.
"That girl in there is so annoying, her service is disgusting."
I scrunched up my face in confusion. Wasn't she the one being disrespectful?
To my horror Diego agreed.
"I know right. I went in there and she treated me like dirt. Hate people like that."
The girl chuckled loudly and looked at me once again.
"And she looks terrible I mean who goes to work looking like that."
"That's what I thought!"
Their voices faded out in the distance. I was so taken aback I didn't know what to do next. I didn't care about the girl, but Diego? He just agreed with her.
Suddenly I had mixed feelings. How could someone that had been there for me at my lowest, talk down on me?
I glanced at the clock. Only an hour had passed. Fuck.
