Grayson Bailey Dolan

Welcome to Newark, New Jersey. The plane had come to a halt and I was looking out of the window at the far away city—the paradise, the city of dreamers, the one and only New York City. I have dreamt of seeing New York since I've been a child and even the opportunity to see it from the window of an airplane is satisfying.

At the airport, we gathered our luggage and I followed my new family along the way. They seemed to know their way around Newark Liberty. My tiny feet tried to keep up with the fast moving Dolans. Out in the city, yellow taxis lined the pavement and I guess this is what a regular New York street would resemble. Dad hailed a cab and after loading the luggage in the boot, we hurriedly settled in. Compared to tiny Bay City where I've spent all my life, a few minutes in noisy New York and I'm wondering how the sound of people yelling and traffic and the horns of vehicles doesn't bother anyone.

Throughout the whole way to the hotel that we were stationed, I stared out the window. I watched as the car drove along the highway. Signboards on the side of the road were painted with names of all cities and towns—JFK Airport, New York City, Philadelphia, etc.

The scene outside the window changed a few times. It went from bustling Jersey  City traffic to tall buildings, probably skyscrapers and then to little forests and green trees around. The only contradictory fact was that the trees weren't green; they were covered with layers and layers of snow.

After arriving at the hotel, we decided to freshen up and get rid of 'airplane air', as everyone called it. Mom and dad were in one room while Ethan and I were in another. After we checked in, Ethan headed straight for the bed, where he crashed, making me do the rest. After the bellboy had brought in our luggage, Ethan reached for the TV remote and began to browse the channels as if he forgot that we were leaving to meet his family in just a while. He kicked his shoes to the floor and he also messed up the covers.

'Good job making a mess of everything.',I signed while walking past him.

"Hey, this is the boys' room. It's meant to be messed."

I placed my suitcase in a corner and my bag pack safely on the bed. I removed my travel kit and brushed my hair with my brush.

"Why Grayson, why? Why are you trying to seduce me?",Ethan rolled his eyes from the bed. I turned around and he had a sensual smirk plastered over his face. "You're so innocent with your hairbrush, I just want to bring you here on the bed and ruin the heck out of you. Sounds like a plan, doesn't it?"

'Do you think everyone will like me? Will they accept me?'

The smile on his face disappeared and I won't lie, it was a concern that was on my mind. I wasn't like everyone else. I was different, I was what some people would call 'wonky'. Ethan got off the bed and walked to me. He put his arms around me and I just looked up into his eyes. "They will. I know they will. And even if they don't, I don't care Grayson. All you need is me. I promise."

I looked away, down at the carpet and suddenly, its colours looked all vibrant and very appealing. A finger rested under my chin and Ethan made me look up at him. "I promise you, they'll love you but if I'm being a little too honest, you might want to stay away from Grandfather but that doesn't matter because I hate that man too and we'll be fine. Now come on, let's get dressed."

That was a quick change in the air. I felt reassured with Ethan's words but I didn't understand why he said to keep my distance from his grandfather. "Boys, are you ready?",spoke mom from the other side of the door after they knocked on it twice.

"Will be there.",called Ethan from the bathroom as he wiped his face with a towel. He smiled at me as he proceeded to open the door.
