John woke up the next morning to the pleasant surprise of Alex being wrapped around him. He moved and Alex immediately grumbled and wrapped himself tighter around him.
Chuckling, John rubbed his boyfriend's back. "Hey baby, we need to get up, we've got school and we gotta see Thomas to talk to him about the situation with your dad," he coaxed.
Immediately Alex stiffened and rolled out of his arms, up and running out of the room before John had time to process what was happening. "Shit," he swore as he rolled into a sitting position and following his boyfriend.
Alex ran to the kitchen, stopping in the doorframe and staring at his adoptive father. "Is he going to take me away?" he asked quietly, his voice trembling.
Philip barely raised his face from his hands as he replied, "He's certainly going to try." Alex muffled a sob with his hands and sank to the floor.
John arrived and caught him before he could. "Mr. Schuyler?" he said quietly. "Would you like me to call my dad?"
Lifting his head to look the boy in the arms, Philip smiled weakly. "It's fine John, we can worry about it later," he tried to assure his son's boyfriend.
Biting his lip, John shook his head. "I don't think we can afford to wait until later," he replied. "My dad's practice is well known as the best one in this part of Manhattan. If Alex's dad goes to my dad and enlists him before we get a chance to, then there's a chance that we would lose the case.
"If it goes to court, that is," he added as an afterthought.
Philip sighed and gestured for John to bring Alex closer. He pulled out the chair next to him and John gently placed Alex down in it. "I'll go call him just now, before his office opens," John promised, leaving the room.
Looking over at his son, currently slumped over the table with his face in his arms, Philip felt at a loss. "You know that me and John and Thomas and your sisters will do everything we can to keep you here, right?"
Alex nodded. "But is it going to be enough?" he asked quietly.
"We'll make it enough," John said determinedly, re-entering the kitchen. "My dad said he can come over tonight, talk about it in more depth with you Mr. Schuyler."
Philip smiled at the boy his son was in love with. "Thank you, John," he murmured. "Now, you two should go get ready for school. You've got a lot to talk about with Thomas today. I'll give you a lift."
John lightly tapped Alex's shoulder to encourage him to get up, but the boy just turned and held his arms up to be picked up. John huffed, but scooped his boyfriend into his arms, where he clung to him in a hug.
"Give us ten minutes," John promised. He walked back up to Alex's room, taking note of how quiet the house was and realising that Alex's sisters must have already left for school.
He set Alex down when they got to his bedroom and Alex pouted up at him. John laughed and threw some clean clothes in his face. "Get dressed," he ordered.
Alex did as he was instructed and then the two of them headed downstairs together. Philip stayed true to his word and drove them to school, even stopping to get Alex coffee per his request.
When they got out of the car, Alex jumped onto John's back, making the older boy carry him as he buried his face between his shoulder blades.
"Alex, John!" Thomas called cheerfully from his position by the wall. Laf and Herc were standing with him as the three obviously waited on the pair.
John forced a smile onto his face as he walked towards his friends and boyfriend. "Hey guys, hey Tom," he greeted them, giving his boyfriend a quick kiss. Alex didn't say anything, just pressed his face deeper into John's back.
Feeling the telltale warmth of tears through the fabric of his t-shirt, John carefully shifted Alex around so that he was pressed against his front and could bury his face in the crook of his neck instead.
Thomas frowned and mouthed, 'Is he okay?' at John. John shook his head carefully. "Hey, I don't know about you two, but I don't really feel up to going to classes today," Thomas commented casually.
Alex's head shot up and glared at his boyfriend. "Me? Miss class? Are you mad?" he asked. Thomas chuckled and gently rested a hand on Alex's cheek.
"There's that pretty face I've missed," he cooed. "You gonna tell me what's wrong, sweetheart?" Alex pouted and reburied his face in John's shoulder.
"Ah, nope, you're not spending the whole day clinging to me and hiding," John said gently. "You can't afford to, doll. You didn't want anyone outside of our friend group knowing about us, remember?"
Alex grumbled and let go of his boyfriend reluctantly. "Fine," he groaned. Then he held out his arms to Thomas.
The elder chuckled and accepted a quick hug, pulling back before Alex could get attached. The younger whined and pouted. Laf cooed at the boy and held out his arms.
"Since your boyfriends are refusing to give you affection, would you accept it from me?" he asked playfully. Alex considered for a moment before throwing himself into the other boy's arms.
John and Thomas exchanged a look that was equal parts amused and concerned. "You good there Lex?" John asked.
The boy nodded into his current cuddle buddy's shoulder. The bell rang and John and Thomas exchanged a quick kiss. "Alex, we gotta go to class, you have to let go of Laf," Thomas coaxed.
"No," the boy whined.
Laf 'aww'ed at him and said, "It's fine, I don't mind. We have the same class anyway." Thomas raised an eyebrow.
Then he sighed and said, "I've got him after that. I'll see you then Alex."
John leaned over and pressed a quick kiss to the top of Alex's head. "I'll see you at break, okay?" he checked. Alex nodded and John ruffled his hair. "See you around squirt."
Thomas and John walked into the school together, Laf and Alex by attachment going in via another door that was much closer to the French department. "Is everything alright?" Thomas asked worriedly.
"Alex will tell you later," John sighed. "But no, not really. I'll see you around Tom."
