Henry wasn't going to lie, he was worried about John. His eldest son had come home from hanging out with Peggy in tears and had gone straight up to his room without saying a word to him.
When the doorbell rang and John's close friends Alexander and Thomas were standing on his doorstep, Henry felt extremely relieved. "He's in his room, boys," he said in lieu of a greeting.
Alex nodded briefly in thanks before running up the stairs, Thomas following hot on his heels. The two skidded to a halt in front of John's door, hesitating.
Alex nodded at Thomas, encouraging him to knock. He took a deep breath before lightly tapping on the wood, prompting John to yell, "Go to hell!" He shut his eyes in preparation before opening the door.
John was curled under his covers and quiet sobs could be heard. Thomas wanted nothing more than to run to him, hug him and wipe his tears away, but he knew that wouldn't be appreciated.
Tutting, Alex walked to the bed, sitting next to the lump under the duvet and gently rubbing his back. "Hey baby," he said softly. "Do you wanna come out?" There was a shake of his head and Alex sighed. "I'll cuddle you if you come out," he bargained.
There was a hesitant pause in the crying before John poked his head out and looked at Alex. He glanced around and caught sight of Thomas, still standing awkwardly in the corner and his face crumpled as he started sobbing again.
Alex pulled his boyfriend into his arms, rocking him gently. "Shhh, it's okay, it's okay, I get it, let it all out baby," he coaxed. Thomas fidgeted, not sure what to do.
John mumbled something and Alex prompted him to say it again. "'s Thomas still mad at me?" he asked through his tears. "'s that why he doesn't wan' be near me?"
Hearing those words broke Thomas and he ran to his boyfriends, pulling John into his arms. John clung to him, sobbing into his neck as Thomas started crying as well.
"I'm so sorry baby girl," Thomas mumbled. "So sorry. I shouldn't have said that." John nodded and Alex gently stroked up and down his boyfriends' backs.
Once he had calmed down, John sat up and wiped his eyes. "No, you shouldn't've said that," he agreed. "But I accept your apology and I forgive you."
Thomas smiled weakly and hugged him. Alex cooed. "Now that that's over, what were you even arguing about in the first place?" he asked.
His two boyfriends exchanged a look. Thomas raised an eyebrow and jerked his head in Alex's direction, prompting John to tell him.
John looked down at his lap and quietly said, "I asked Thomas why he was so on board with you and your dad hanging out more now and he called me jealous and said that I was never around."
Frowning, Alex asked, "You don't want me to see my dad?"
John sighed, moving and resting his head on the headboard. "It's not that I don't want you to see him," he started to explain. "It's just that he abandoned you and didn't turn up when you needed him and everything was fine and then he appeared out of nowhere!
"I mean, think about it, Alex. Doesn't it seem a bit convenient?" he asked. Alex frowned and looked away.
"I don't want to think about it," he said quietly. "For the first time in my life, my biological dad is interested in my life, why would you want to take that away from me?!" he exclaimed.
John swallowed harshly and looked away from his boyfriend. "Please leave, I don't want to have this argument," he tried weakly.
Scoffing, Alex yelled, "Well, I do!"
