How would she make a cake without eggs or butter? She had almond milk since it didn't need to be refrigerated until it was opened. "Sure, let me figure out how I will do it." They finished unpacking everything. She grabbed a few cans of spaghetti sauce, and they had noodles, too. They'll have that for dinner. She had everything they needed to make bread and some homemade garlic bread. They might die if the power ever gets taken away.
Kenzie got to work on the bread and popped it in the oven; then, she started working on the cake. She looked at the back; it needed milk, eggs, and butter, so almond milk, applesauce, and oil would have to work. "Guys, it might not be the best cake; I don't have two main ingredients."
"It's okay," Kel whispered before turning to Sooah and asking if she wanted to play in his room. They took off towards his room, and she returned to making the cake. She popped it in the oven; it should be done by the time the bread was done.
She picked a pot and added water to it so it could boil. Then she grabbed a saucepan and started warming up the spaghetti sauce. Today, they were going to feast; tomorrow, they would go back to rations. But she was sure that Jin was hungry after walking through all that nonsense out there for weeks.
When she was icing the cake, Jin walked out freshly cleaned, looking finer than anyone had a right to be. "It smells good. Is that an actual cake?"
Kenzie washed the butterknife off and turned to look at him, "I told the kids they could pick three things that they wanted. Kel picked cake. I hope it tastes okay since I didn't have everything I needed."
The timer went off, and she drained the noodles before adding them to the sauce. "Kel, Sooah, come eat." They ran in and sat down. Kel chose to sit next to Jin, and again, she was shocked. They took a bite, and she asked if it was good. Kel gave her a thumbs-up, and Sooah signed that it was yummy.
The four of them ate in comfortable silence. The only sound heard was the scraping of silverware against their plates. Kel looked at her and signed, asking if they could have cake now. Kenzie nodded her head and went to get each of them a piece. She cut one for Jin as well. "Not going to try it?" she said.
She nodded no, "It's Kels treat; I don't need any."
Wow, this girl was selfless. Jin cut his piece in half, and when he was done eating his half, he slid the plate over to her. "Here, I'm full."
She knew he was lying, but she appreciated it. It wasn't the best cake, but it was pretty decent since they were in the middle of the Zombie Apocalypse. "So you two, I'm going to do some laundry, then you can take a bubble bath if you want?"
That made both of them happy. She told them to get their dirty clothes and bring them to the bathroom. She went to get Jin's stuff and hers as well. She poured some laundry soap into the tub and tossed in the clothes. They had a washing machine that was out on the balcony and made too much noise. She didn't want to attract attention. She got to washing all of their stuff, and she blushed a bit when cleaning his underwear. She wasn't innocent, but it's been a few years since she'd rolled around in the sheets with anyone.
Kenzie hung everything on the living room's drying lines, filling the tub with water and bubbles. "Come on, my little minions!"
They ran and hopped into the bath. She washed their hair and bodies and let them play until their fingers turned all pruney. "Time to get out, you two; it's bedtime." Once dressed, she laid down with them in Jin's old bed and read them two stories—one in Korean and one in English. She kissed them both and then went to pick Sooah up and carry her to her room.
"I'll get her." She turned to look at Jin, who was standing in the doorway. Kenzie nodded her head, and he picked her up. They settled her into her bed. She kissed her forehead and tip-toed out of her room.
