chapter one.
the house party

Three months earlier:
"C'mon this will be so fun!" Allison exclaims as she pulls me from my car. My comfy, warm, safe car not to mention. "Do i look okay?" she questions me; waving one hand across her body and using the other to pull down her black dress. She looks amazing as usual but i give her an answer nevertheless. "You look amazing ally, if you weren't with whatshisname i'd marry you on the spot", Allison scoffs in reply, rolling her eyes, "I've told you his name a billion times Rue, now come on lets go in!"

Tonight is the fateful night that Allison has finally managed to drag me out of my room to a party in beacon hills, at the home of the "renowned" Lydia Martin. She says its for me to "meet new people" before i go to college, but really i just think she wants me to see how hot her new boyfriend is. I really don't want to be here, i'm not good at making friends and this red dress that Ally has made me wear is undoubtedly going to make me stand out. But Allison countlessly reassured me that Lydia throws the best parties in Beacon Hills so hopefully this statement proves true.

Despite my attempts at digging my heels into the concrete, i find myself moving closer and closer towards the house with each passing moment as Allison's purple manicured nails dig into my wrist mercilessly, pulling me up the steps and releasing me only to knock the big double doors.

I look around nervously, waiting for the door to open, when i notice myself in the reflection of a window. I look significantly different, my usual frizzy hair is pulled back into a "sleek half up half down" as Allison calls it .There's two pieces of hair pulled from it, framing my face which almost looks golden in this light and the eyeliner that Allison begged me to let her do really brings out my eyes which i hate to admit it but i kind of love it...

My train of thought is broken, when the front door suddenly swings open and i'm greeted with a bubbly red-head and the booming sound of music.

This must be Lydia.

"Allison hey! Come in!" she gushes as they embrace, Allison steps back to squeeze my hand and introduces me. Panic sets in.

Oh my God why did i not plan what to say in advance, she's going to think i'm boring or stupid or-or-

"Hi Rue!" She beams

Flustered and unaware of what to say, i stick out my hand for lydia to shake, instantly regretting it. She stares at me peculiarly for a moment and a creeping feeling of embarrassment and anxiety rises in my stomach as i turn the same colour as my dress. I frantically search my mind to form a sentence that might break this awkward silence, until finally, after what seems like an eternity, she lets out a giggle and pulls me in for a hug.

"I like you," she smiles warmly and I smile right back.

"This isn't a business meeting Rue" Allison giggles as we walk over to meet her friends. "Shut up!" I reply, nudging her shoulder and internally groaning as i replay the embarrassment from earlier.  I grip tighter on the drink in my hand, scanning the room anxiously as i prepare myself to meet Allison's other friends, and actively try to avoid any more embarrassment for the rest of the night. "So... Where are they?" i question Allison, who after a few moments of no response i spot on the other side of the room, wrapping her arms around a tall brunette boy. I stand there awkwardly for a few seconds before forcing myself forward and introducing myself to Allisons newfound "lover".

"Hey, i'm Rue" i smile and the boy smiles back. "Scott" he replies warmly, i can see what Ally sees in him— he's not only super attractive but he gives off a sort of wholesome energy, from what i can tell at least; i'm not exactly the best judge of character. Allison smiles at the both of us whilst interlacing her fingers with Scott's and beginning to ask him about the science assignment they'd been set. I stood awkwardly for a moment, thinking of what to say, before turning to notice Lydia making her way over to us, accompanied by two other girls.

"Rue, this is Malia", Lydia exclaims as she points to a girl with golden brown hair fashioned into an attractive pixie cut. She smiles as she pours a blue liquid from one cup into another.

"And this is Kira." She continues, pointing to a girl with long dark hair who beams at me brightly and runs straight to hug me. I'm taken aback by this and freeze for a few seconds before hugging her back- she smells like vanilla and vodka and giggles in my ear, as she gushes about how nice it is to meet me. I thank her , complimenting her dress as i'm interrupted by Malia-

"Sorry about her, she's very affectionate when she's drunk", she smiles at me wrapping her arm around Kira's shoulder and offering me a drink.

"Oh thank you" i reply, "but i already have one". I look down at the drink that i've hardly touched, Malia grins in response, pushing the drink she's holding into my hand.

"Loosen up Rue, just down both of them, you'll feel better."

I meet her eyes and smile gratefully, i guess i could use some liquid courage, i can only see this night getting worse if i don't. I wrap my lips around the rim of the cup and drink as quickly as possible- i cough slightly, my face contorting into a grimace as the burn of the vodka slips down the back of my throat. Everyone laughs at my reaction as they each effortlessly chug their drinks and Malia goes to fetch more.

As i wait, listening to the groups conversations, i catch something just within my peripheral vision, a figure on the couch behind Allison and Scott. I move my head to get a better look  and i notice it staring straight at me, red cup in hand. The figure in question is a boy with dark messy hair, dressed in a white tee, a flannel and jeans. I stare more intently, the flashing lights of the party seem to catch his face perfectly; highlighting his forehead laced with sweat, his face contorted into a dismissive expression and even the sheen of alcohol droplets carefully placed on his soft lips . His body moves slowly, showing the contours of his hands and jawline as he shifts further into view.

This must be Stiles.

That's weird- i think to myself, he's the only one out of Ally's friends not to great me, maybe he's just tired, maybe he doesn't know who i am. I smile at him raising my fingers from the red cup i'm holding to give him a slight wave. He stares straight at me clenching his jaw, his unimpressed expression doesn't falter and he definitely does not smile back. It's almost if his eyes are burning through me. He doesn't break the eye contact and i last with this uncomfortable situation for as long as i can stand until i drop my gaze to the floor, fiddling with the hem of my dress.

Allison notices me staring at the ground and nudges my arm gently, "Are you okay?" she asks, concerned. I tilt my head up, looking at her through my eyelashes "I don't think Stiles likes me very much" i reply timidly, embarrassed at how upset i feel over the interaction, she looks at me with a trace of pity in her eyes, turning to look behind her. I feel so stupid, so weak, like a child telling their mother about being bullied.
pathetic.
Allison turns back to me  , "Stiles doesn't deal very well with change within the group, a lot of things have happened lately and he struggles with trust" she says with a sympathetic smile. Causing me to wonder - how bad could this drama have been to cause him to act like this,  a drama that my best friend didn't think to even mention to me- surely it couldn't have been that bad?

A voice pipes up, causing the group to fall silent and everyone to stare-

"I hate change" Stiles spits, his posture stiffening, and yet again staring right at me.
