Blaine Rossi, the current boss of the Rossi family, sat in his office on his family's estate and waited for the recent news on the group of hunters he had sent out. Anyone who knew of the Vampire Hunter Guild would know they would never form ties with any other organization. But the Rossi family's undisclosed alliance with the Vampire Hunter Guild was a particular case. After the Great Purging in 1912, vampires murdered nearly eighty percent of the guild, leaving them without the means to survive in a world controlled by the undead. When the Rossi family learned of the notorious Vampire Hunter Guild's fate, they offered their funding and an alliance, but the Rossi family would be in control. The guild accepted the alliance, and for over a hundred years, the two groups coexisted in peace.

After he learned Gavin Xavier was half-vampire, he tried to recruit him by sending letters, but Xavier never responded. He ordered his men to pose as vampires and attack the other families. Blaine planned to convince them to side with him regarding his cause, but he had never meant for anyone to be killed. When he learned his men had targeted Xavier's driver only because he was a vampire, the Vampire Hunter Guild had declared with their actions that they no longer listened to his orders.

If Xavier tracked down the Vampire Hunter Guild, the broken alliance would lead to him. Blaine needed time to figure out a way to save the Rossi family from ruin and stop the Vampire Hunter Guild from destroying everything. He must convince Xavier to join his cause because he couldn't risk having him as an enemy.

Mia stood in front of the floor-length mirror as she gazed at herself in the clothing Gavin had chosen. She wore a fuchsia-colored off-the-shoulder floor-length chiffon evening gown with a bodice embellished with pearls and a pair of silver Jimmy Choo pumps. She had never seen such a gorgeous gown before in her life.

She quickly fixed her hair and put on her make-up. She wanted to see Gavin. Butterflies danced chaotically in her belly as she thought about kissing him again. She would rather stay at home with him than go out to the party, but she could never have him all to herself since he was an important man.

Mia walked to her bedroom door, but her phone vibrated in her fuchsia, pearl-encrusted clutch purse. Lashonda had texted her:

Lashonda

Hey, girlie, I wanted to let you know Dustin is awake and is clear to go home.

Mia

He is?! Tell him I am glad he's okay!

Lashonda

I will. He woke up after you left. You've always had terrible luck.

Mia

Lol! I know. I'll check in on him at school when I see him. Did you tell him everything I told you?

Lashonda

Yes. He said he'd talk to you about it.

Mia

I figured. What about Grace?

Lashonda

She hasn't come back to campus yet. I also wanted to tell you the Fall Dance is back on.

Mia

Really?

Lashonda

That's all you have to say? You were excited about it two months ago.
