Friday Morning
When Gavin saw the blonde-haired man exit the sedan in her parents' driveway, Gavin felt a hot flash of jealousy rush through him. Did she have a boyfriend? If she did, he felt guilty. He did not want to force her into a relationship, even though he technically had done that. Gavin ran his fingers through his hair and then leaned his forehead against the steering wheel. He forced himself to calm down. If he gave in to his emotions, he would wreck everything he had planned.
He wanted to wait for her to depart the house, but if her boyfriend hung around, he would leave. Gavin wanted to see her again, but he felt conflicted about approaching her. After the man entered his vehicle and drove away, Gavin's face burned with anger. His jealousy grew, and as his heart pounded, his blood burned for destruction. His fingers tightened around the steering wheel. Gavin knew her parents would give her the news, and then she would be stranded.
Mia had admitted to him that she walked home from her parents the night she found him. She told him many things while intoxicated, and he suspected she never realized. Since her boyfriend left, Gavin could ask her questions about the marriage and her boyfriend. If she genuinely were dating the man who dropped her off, Gavin would release Mia. He would allow her family to keep the money, but he would never reveal himself to her again.
After thirty minutes, Mia exited the house and stood at the end of the driveway. Gavin watched as she walked down the street. Before she wandered too far, Gavin started his car and followed her.
He rolled his window down and called out, "Why are you out here during this time of night? Don't you know it's dangerous to be out here alone?"
He saw her jump. When she turned toward him, she responded, "You scared me. I thought you were someone dangerous."
"I could have very well been someone dangerous, young lady."
"Well, I am thankful that you were not."
Gavin sighed and stopped his car. "I was driving through the neighborhood after meeting one of my clients for a house party when I saw you," he lied. Gavin unlocked his car. "Would you like a ride back to campus?"
"Yes, please," she said.
She walked around the car, opened the passenger side door, and sat in the leather seat. After putting on her seat belt, she smiled at him. "I am so glad that you are here. I was not looking forward to walking home."
Once he was driving again, he asked, "What were you doing out here, anyway?"
"I... I had an emergency at home," she said with a small voice.
"Why didn't your parents drive you home?"
Mia did not respond to his question.
He peered at her from the side. Gavin dreaded asking this question because he did not want to hear the truth. He struggled to form the words, but after a few moments of silence, he asked, "Don't you have a boyfriend that can pick you up?"
"I don't have a boyfriend," she stated.
Relief coursed through him at her words. The man he saw must have been a friend then. He could continue with his plan. She may still have someone that she liked even if she was not dating anyone. The guilt nagged at him to tell her the truth.
"Were you able to figure out how to pay back the money?"
Mia turned toward him with her mouth hanging open. Her face flushed in embarrassment. Gavin enjoyed seeing her facial expressions, but if she knew that he could see her in the dark, she would fear him. He wondered how Mia would react to his secret. She would hate him because history never lied.
