Chapter Five

When it hurts to look back,

And you're scared to look ahead, you can look beside you and your bestfriend will be there... Right?

We walked through corridor after corridor until we finally walked through some big swingy doors that read 'Intensive Care'. I wasn't sure if it made me feel better knowing that we were almost to Sammy, or if it made me worse knowing that she was in intensive care.

The nurse stopped and turned on her heel to look at me.

"Now before we go in, I thought I should just tell you the state that your friend is in." She looks at me as if she wants me to answer, oh right, she wants me to give her the okay to go on. I nod at her.

"Well Katrina, Samantha is in a coma, her parents are probably still in there, they went to see you but you were still unconscious. But anyway I have been through her status with het parents numerous times, so I will quickly give you the outline of how she is and then you may go in." She said, she paused so if I wanted I could say something. Samantha's parents have always been so nice to me, they didn't really like my fashion, but they loved me like I was part of their family.

Ever since my parents died, they had been looking after me. Before my parents died they thought I was cold hearted, I don't know why. But when my parents died I guess they saw a new me. They invited me over for sleepovers and when Sam and I had slumber parties with just us two, her mum would come in and paint our toes whilst we ate chocolate and watched sappy movies. Sappy love movies were always her thing. Me, I hate them. Love is a lie.

"When we found Sam she was still breathing, but her heart was weak from the loss of blood, we were able to fix that up because she didn't have a rare blood type, unlike you. But even though she had enough blood in her she wasn't taking it like we hopped she would. She is in a coma and we don't know when or if she will wake up."

I gulped, "What do you mean if?" I asked. I already knew what she meant, but I just wanted to make sure I was hearing her properly.

"She is in a very bad state, although we were able to patch her up the inside of her isn't so good. She may be in the coma for so long, that its just a waste." She said pausing for a second to take her breath.

"So your saying that her life will just be a waste so you will cut of her life source?!" I snapped before she could continue. I mean, come on people this is a hospital, you help people, you don't decide when they die. Actually, you kind of do.

"Katrina, what I mean is that if she doesn't wake up she will just be a body, breathing, heart beating, but she wont wake up. Do you really think that she will want to be trapped in her body? Don't you think that she would want to be let go, to go to heaven?" She had a good point, but I wasn't going to give up on my friend, my bestfriend we've been through everything together.

I was about to open my mouth again and use some smart comment or some sarcasm to make me feel better, but before I could Mrs Summers opened the door.

"Oh thank god! I was so worried about you sweet pea." I always called her Mrs Summers because that was just what I was used too also because she was one of those really proper teachers who you had to call by there name, she was also a teacher at our school, so it actually has nothing to do with the fact that I cant remember her name, actually it had everything to do with that. Just like I called her Mrs Summers she called me sweet pea, but not because she didn't know my name.
