A/N: Okay, so just to importantly note, this is based off of Collateral Damage on AO3 by the amazing dracusfyre which can be found here; archiveofourown.org/works/9087388/chapters/20660995

They'd picked up Steve earlier that day, him and Natasha. Since they were pretty much on the run from S.H.I.E.L.D. for some reason they were trying to figure out, thanks to the portable drive Steve had been entrusted with by Fury before his demise.
At the moment, they were in his private jet, out of reach from most people’s line of shooting, or so he thought. J.A.R.V.I.S. was working brilliantly as usual, trying to configure the USB stick that Natasha thought might give them information before Jarvis interrupted himself to say, “Apologies for the interruption, sir, but there appears to be a missile approaching.”
Tony cursed under his breath, of course they found them. They were some of the Earth’s mightiest heroes ater all.
He asked the AI system, "Jarvis, do you know how close the missile is?" It took the system a moment to configure a reply for that before the AI replied, "Steadily approaching toward the jet, sir."
Tony sighed as he dragged a hand over his face,"Well, shit. Okay. Nat, while Jarvis is trying to cut through the brick wall that is the security on this thing, did Fury ever tell you it was on it?"" he turned to ask the former Russian spy.
Natasha replied, shaking her head, "No. I don't know what it is apart from the fact that Fury didn't trust it with anyone but Steve here. I don't know about you, but that seems just a little bit too specific to me." she added, skeptical as ever due to her days of not knowing who she could trust or keep the farthest distance from.
Steve replied with a sigh, "No. You're right but he didn't tell me what was on that thing. He just told me not to trust anybody." he replied honestly, just wanting his teammates to know what was going on.
"That probably included himself, Cap. He was an untrustworthy bastard. Jarvis, do you know where we are at least?" Tony replied with a roll of his eyes, he didn’t even know where they were, he hated not knowing things, it made him feel vulnerable and once that feeling came, it was damn hard to shake. He didn’t need that right now, it would only cloud his judgement, so he did what he did best, and shoved it aside.
The AI was just about to respond before the missile hit Tony's private plane but since they were high enough in the air and off of the ground so they could get away with crash landing, before Tony said something along the lines of, “Hold on to your hats, guys. It’s about to get shakier than than a salt cellar.”
Once they landed, it seemed to be an old training centre that had been derelict and abandoned for decades. It took a moment for the blond to look at it before realisation dawned on him as he softly spoke, "Wait a second, I… I know this place. This is where they trained me, before the serum."
He tried to ignore the lump of emotion in his throat when a wave of memories came crashing back to him, missing his old flame deep in the pit of his stomach now he thought about the early secretive days of their relationship, little did Steve know, he wouldn’t have to wait long until seeing Bucky again soon.
Tony sucked in a breath and sighed as he replied, kicking a stone away lazily with his boot, "So...the old man was lying. He did work outside of New York. Figures." he shrugged, ignoring the venom behind those words. He’d known that Howard lied to him about a lot of things, it really wasn’t a bit deal, so why was he so pissed about it? He didn’t have the first clue, but would figure it out later, after this mess was dealt with. Besides, a breakdown was due in course and since Loki had been dealing with Asgardian business, having been let in on a few business deals and politics in his coming back, it just wasn’t the same in his big comfortable queen sized bed wasn’t comfortable without the god lying in it beside him.
Natasha spotted that he was thinking something over that would be more trouble than they could afford to bring to this situation, always the fighter. She was about to tell him they couldn’t afford to, "Now isn't the time to ar- Tony, watch out!" but that was when a guy dressed entirely in black with a metal arm, a mask covering his face and a few guns shot at Tony.
He had just enough time to turn so that the bullet pierce his shoulder and not the arc reactor. "What the fuck? How the hell did someone shoot through my suit?" he exclaimed, not just pissed but enraged now, whoever dared to shoot through his suit wasn’t getting out of this without a bruise or two.
"That's not what's important. We need to get the hell out of here." Natasha yelled at them, grabbing his hand which he pulled away from just in the nick of time to escape her firm hold.
The captain ran full force at the guy, fighting him with everything he had, serum improved strength and stamina until the masked assassin’s mask fell from his face, causing Steve to freeze, going into shock at the expressionless face of his former lover before him as he whispered in shock, “Bucky?”
Steve wasn’t much good for fighting after that, so it was pretty much, all resting on Tony which wasn’t doing his anxiety an favours, but it was what it was.
