Avoid cars. you're just "canned food" at that point. Never travel at night and if you're in a building, MAKE SURE IT'S NOT INFECTED. Be sure an area is CLEAR of the infected, and then make sure you are not VULNERABLE.

NEVER go into a basement. You will be trapped down there. As much as you can, travel UP, and destroy any paths that zombies can use.

Zombies can't run; they don't have the coordination. They also cannot climb or swim. However, they CAN climb stairs just as easily as they can fall down them, which is why it is better to use ladders than stairs.

AVOID WINDOWS and places with lots of windows. Find someplace sturdy, like a fortress. A fortress can be any building equipped to withstand siege. A school is a great fortress. Several rooms to barricade one's self in, internal plumbing, most likely food... The walls are sturdy and strong, the doors are reinforced and open outward, so they CANNOT be be pushed in, and the windows are typically small and SHOULD have a wire mesh inside for added protection. Windows in schools tend to also be THICK. NOT EASILY BREAKABLE.

While zombies can't swim, they are still made of matter and tissue and fat and muscle. Some will sink. Some will float. If you decide to stay safely in the middle of a lake, awesome. A pond, not so much. Take a spear-like weapon with you, and attach it to some rope. If you come across floating bodies/zombies in the water, you can always spear them, drag them closer to you, and destroy their brain, neutralizing the threat and helping to prevent further infection. However, DO NOT GO SWIMMING. A sunken zombie can still travel underwater, and reach up and snag your foot. They can disappear and travel long distances, which is how come more outbreaks are started in places far away from the original site of the outbreak.

One zombie will mostly likely attract another. They make noise. Zombies are attracted to noises and light and movement. Their brains have been "remodeled"; their senses will be better than ours too. Hearing, sight, and smell. They cannot feel. They cannot taste. The urge to feed is a purely an instinctual reflex that the virus cannot eliminate.

Once you are bitten, that's it. If you are traveling alone and you are by yourself, kill yourself. It's better for everyone and you are doing your part to prevent further infection. If you have a traveling partner or partners, have them kill you. They can also give you proper burial and respect. Destroy the brain to prevent reanimation. (only if the outbreak is fully underway and there is absolutely NO WAY that it is a misunderstanding)

Be VERY wary of other human beings. If it is a Stage 3 or Stage 4 outbreak (meaning VERY VERY LARGE, and APOCOLYPTIC respectively), humans are desparate and dangerous individuals. Vandals, murderers, and thieves will not be stopped. Do not approach someone unless you are absolutely sure that they will be a safe companion.

DO NOT TRAVEL IN LARGE GROUPS. Larger groups make more noise. Larger groups are harder to keep order in. Larger groups are harder to feed and protect. Larger groups tend to be more detrimental to your survival.

Take only what you need. Don't waste too much time carrying food. Carry water instead. Money may come in handy when dealing with thieves. Make sure you arm yourself for protection; DON'T try to use armor. The best armor you have is speed and agility. Wear tight-fitting clothes, and if you have long hair, tie it up. If it's lose, a zombie can snag it's fingers in your hair and drag you back to it. Ponytails are harder to catch. The best bet, though, is to cut it short. Short hair is safer.

Avoid cities if you can. Cities mean more people, which means more risk of being infected. There is almost no safe place to hide in bigger cities. Small towns are also notorious. Zombies can close in on you just as quick.
