Fairytale

Life isn't a fairytale.

The same thought had been swarming the redhead's mind for days, and she wanted it to stop so badly.

Anne Shirley-Cuthbert was many things.

Hot-headed, intelligent, caring...

For the past few days, though, she had only seen herself as one thing: a miserable young lady.

No amount of advice from Diana and her other friends could change her mind.

None of the books she read could take her mind off of what had happened.

And the worst of all, nothing could amount to her regret of not telling the boy who loved her that she had loved him back.

Yes, Gilbert Blythe, the boy who had loved her since she whacked his face with a slate, was completely oblivious to the fact that his feelings for her were reciprocated.

Anne tried not to think too much of it. She tried so hard not to cry over a boy, but the thing was, he wasn't just any boy.

He was the boy who had saved her from being harassed by a bully.

He was the boy who had tried to befriend her when no one else wanted to at school.

He was the boy who tried to defend her when she had a sudden outburst in class.

He was the intelligent boy who made learning at school much more fun for her.

He was the boy who refused to have anyone talk ill about Anne, especially if she wasn't around to hear it.

He was Gilbert Blythe, the only boy who had ever stolen her heart.

And right now, she swore she had gotten her heart broken by the same boy.

Do I truly want this life that was taken straight out of a fairytale?

Gilbert Blythe was lying down on the bed inside the house that Nigel Rose, Winifred's father, had provided for him. He was thinking hard about many things.

Although, admittedly, the majority of his thoughts were filled with the color red.

Red hair, to be specific.

His mind often wandered to the night he had indirectly confessed his feelings to his beloved, Anne Shirley-Cuthbert.

She was confused, that much he could tell, but what he didn't realize was that the reason for her confusion wasn't just the alcohol taking over her mind and system.

No, he didn't know that she thought it was too good to be true for him to give up his dreams just to be with her.

He constantly thought about that night and cringed at how Anne was at loss for words, so he put it upon himself to assume that she didn't feel the same way. Or, at least, he convinced himself that she didn't feel the same way, since he didn't know how to approach her after having such an awkward interaction before.

He wanted to ask about her feelings directly, with both of them being at the right state of mind.

If he was being completely honest, though, he didn't know how he could ask such a thing. Or, maybe, he just didn't want to have to face the problem at hand.

Gilbert Blythe was good at many things, including running away from his own problems.

That just might be the reason he cried himself to sleep for days, always being asked by his future wife and father-in-law as to why, but he'd always brush it off and say it was just homesickness.

From an outsider's perspective, you'd think he had it all.

A blessing from the father of his future wife, who had also provided him a huge house in Paris, as well as having the privilege of studying at a prestigious school for him to become a doctor.

But he didn't feel like he had it all.

For he knew, deep down, what he wanted was always right in front of him.

The very problem he ran away from was the solution.

However, at this point, he had given up.

This wasn't the fairytale he wanted to live in.

Author's Note: I'm so sorry for my inactivity! I've been getting into anime lately and so I haven't really been in the mood to update this BUT today I had a writing prompt that randomly popped up in my head while washing the dishes, so I apologize if this is quite bad and rushed. I'm not sure of how frequent I'll update but I'm definitely not done with this book yet. I'll be busy for school by next week so we'll just have to see what happens then. Also the photo at the top was a crappy edit of mine lmao. I hope you're all doing well and taking care!
