[SEASON 3 SPOILERS]

It was a long day for everyone. Especially for a certain redhead who realized her feelings for a certain boy, far too late.

Anne Shirley-Cuthbert finally realized that she was in love with Gilbert Blythe after all this time. She was so sure of herself as she repeatedly said that she loved him.

She wondered if anyone could ever love her. She always thought she would become a bride of adventure, not giving herself up to a man and simply just settling down. She remembered the promise that she made with Cole years back about marrying each other if they couldn't find anyone else; two kindred spirits to be married as one, not as two different lovers, but equals.

Cole was a great friend, very kind and caring, but Anne clearly wanted Gilbert, and him only. She thought of how foolish she was to reject him all those times.

She thought of the day she whacked Gilbert over the head with her slate and even broke it, and she giggled as she sat on her bed, feeling giddy at the memory when he had actually defended her after she hurt him terribly. It was obvious for anyone with eyes and ears that he always genuinely cared for Anne from the moment they met.

"If only I could go back," she whispered to herself.

If only I hadn't been so foolish and accepted his friendship from the start. It was wrong of Ruby to think that she owned Gilbert when it was clear that what he and I had was much more than her liking to the boy. I should've been brave and knocked sense into my friend. Maybe then Ruby wouldn't have wasted so much time trying to get Gilbert to like her; there were so much boys to choose from for a girl like her. The worst part was the fact that she had Moody now. I had been a great comfort to her and I got a tragical romance in return.

She slowly came to the realization that things could have gone so much better and differently for everyone if she didn't hold back on her feelings for Gilbert. Ruby would've been over him long ago and with a boy who actually took his time to spare a glance at her. Anne and Gilbert could've been on better terms; rivals in school, but great friends nonetheless.

Maybe they could've been more than friends.

But it was too late now. She got her tragical romance.

Meanwhile, after a day had passed, Gilbert Blythe stood in front of the house of the Rose family. He took a deep breath to calm himself.

Today was the start of his future. He would propose to Winifred after getting her father's blessing, and that would change his life drastically.

He wasn't sure if he could do it. He never was. A certain redhead was still stuck to his head.

The same exact one who whacked him over the head with a slate. Maybe that's why he couldn't stop thinking about her. Perhaps it made him crazy for her and her only.

Ever since he met Anne, he couldn't look at any girl in a different way as he saw her. His eyes would always find her face whenever they were in the same room together. And even if she wasn't there, if there was anything, anything at all that reminded him of her even in the slightest bit, a smile would form on his handsome face.

Like that time he went to the Barry's. All it took was for him to listen to the song being played on the piano and he thought back to when they danced together at school. He remembered the way her hands held his. He didn't want to let go of her at the time. He still didn't want to let her go now. No matter how many times he'll call Anne his past and Winifred his future, it's Anne that he's still currently in love with, and perhaps there's no real way for him to get over her anytime soon.
