I inhaled from Remmey's mouth at the same time that he exhaled and kissed him deeper. Remmey quickly pulled away.
"Jazz, don't do that."
"Don't do what?" I gazed into his eyes and tried to pull him closer to me.
Remmey placed his hands on my shoulders and created a slight distance between us.
"Jazz..." he searched my face like he was looking for a trap. He had never looked at me like that before. "That ain't my thing."
"What?" I batted my eyes innocently at him.
Remmey looked annoyed and moved me further away from him.
I kept my eyes on his and leaned in to kiss him again. This time he kissed me back and gripped my hips tighter.
Then he suddenly pushed me away again.
"Jazz...stop with that fucking Rico shit. I told you that ain't my thing."
I tilted my head and looked at him. How did he know that what I was doing was "Rico shit"?
It had been a few weeks since Remmey walked me through Pinemont, away from Rico, to check on me, and I never once told him that's what was going on with me that day...why it seemed like I had no control over myself.
Remmey read my face.
"Ruby tried that shit wit' me. Told me she got it from Rico." He looked at me and, in his face, I saw disappointment. "I told you keep him out of here," he placed his hand over my heart, "and here." He pointed to the middle of my forehead.
I dropped my eyes.
"I'm sorry Remmey." I looked back up at him. "I just..." my eyes locked with his, "...need you. I just need you..."
All of the times that I needed him to just...help me forget...everything, I had never said that out loud to him before.
But he knew it. He had always known that I needed him.
That's why he was always there.
Remmey shook his head, looked at me, and then shook his head again, like he already saw this bullshit coming.
Maybe even from the moment he stood there and silently watched me try to get my own urges under control, out there right in front of everybody. I wasn't that girl. I had never been the type to just...let everyone see everything before. In reality, I had never let anyone see anything before I met Rico. And Remmey knew it.
Of course he had known, even then, what he was looking at.
He said Rico had done Ruby the same way.
I thought again about Ruby and how it seemed like she couldn't get enough.
From everyone.
I wondered briefly if she was already like that, or if Rico had...somehow made her that way.
I also wondered if that was what he was trying to do to me.
"Jazz...you ain't mine. So, I can't give you what you need." He ran his thumb across my bottom lip and gazed at me like he wanted to kiss me again. "Get that shit from Rico."
