"Why did you do it?"
She watched as her uncle tapped a finger against the table. An expression on his face that she couldn't quite decipher. Regardless she stared at him expectantly. Even though by now she already knew his answer.
After a moment he spoke. His voice is rough and slightly raspy due to years of smoking.
"Maybe I had something to prove."
She waited. Already knowing that he had more to say.
"Or maybe I just got tired of being pushed around."
"Witch is it?"
He laughed. It was a low hollow sound. Devoid of anything remotely resembling life. This was something she grown used to during their time together. It was a reminder of the type of person her grandfather truly was.
"Take your pick!"
He grinned. The expression would have given any child her age nightmares for a week. Yet she stood there unphased by his demeanor. She was strong after all,
She had to be.
The grin faded, and in its place was something much warmer. Something that she saw every once and a while. An expression only meant for her and her alone.
"Do I scare you?"
Why did he ask something that they both knew the answer to?
"No."
He smiled.
"Liar."
"Does it matter?!" She snapped. She wasn't in the mood to play his games.
He chuckled. "You wanna know something?"
She stared.
Leaning close to the glass he spoke. The warmth in his eyes fading.
"I'm scared to."
"Of what?"
For a long moment, he just stared. As he did she saw something in his eyes. Something that she wasn't used to seeing. An emotion that sent chills down her spine.
Fear.
"Of myself" he whispered.
Suddenly he lunged forward. His head meeting the glass between them with enough force it visibly cracked. Horrified the eight-year-old did the only thing she could think of.
She screamed.
Gasping Jade sat up. Only to recoil as pain exploded throughout most of her body. Groaning olive-skinned girl flopped back down. Only to regrettably wince a second later.
Closing her eyes Jade tried to remember what happened. However, said task was rather difficult due to the intense pain inside her skull. Gritting her teeth in frustration Jade opened her eyes.
Only to be met with a pair of light brown orbs.
Jade shouted in surprise. Or would have if a hand hadn't covered her face ahead of time.
"Shhh."
Panicking Jade bit down on the hand.
Hard.
To her surprise, the person holding her mouth didn't even react. Instead, the individual leaned closer. It was at that moment that Jade got a good look at their face. Only for her eyes to widen in realization.
It was her neighbor.
The girl with the puffy brown hair.
Memories of what transpired flashed in Jade's mind.
The bathroom.
Piper and her two friends.
The knife.
Everything.
Pushing down her fear Jade forced herself to relax. Once she calmed down the hand moved away from her mouth.
Taking a deep breath Jade looked at the girl who most likely saved her life. In turn, she looked back. A relieved look on her face. From that look alone Jade guessed that she's been out cold for a while. That fact alone meant that her mother was most likely going to kill her when she gets home.
Suddenly the knife didn't seem like such a bad way to go.
"Your awake."
The girl's voice immediately snaps Jade out of her thoughts.
Smirking she replied. "Well, I'm not exactly someone you can put down for long."
That wasn't a lie. There are times were Jade can recover relatively quickly. This was mainly due to the hardship in her earlier life. Do you know the saying that whatever kills you makes you stronger? Well in truth this wasn't the first time she nearly lost her life.
The scar running from down her stomach up to her chest was proof of that.
In response, the girl smiled brightly. Her eyes beaming with something that Jade only encountered once before.
Respect.
"Is there a reason you're looking at me like that?"
She nods.
Jade raised a brow.
She didn't need to be a genius to figure out how utterly bizarre this entire situation is. It's not every day you are saved by someone who confessed to being a cold-blooded killer. Let alone wake up in what Jade presumed to be her bedroom.
She suddenly realized that This could very well be the intro of a killer romance story in the making.
Jade snorted.
The girl before her tilted her head in confusion. Clearing her throat Jade waved it off. "It's nothing to worry about." Despite her reassurance, the girl was still visibly confused. With that in mind, Jade decided to steer the conversation elsewhere. Not unless she wanted to make a fool out of herself.
"So there a reason that I'm currently in your bedroom?"
The girl's confusion morphed into one of amusement.
"Not my room."
Jade furrowed her brows in confusion.
As if answering her question a voice spoke.
"It's mine."
Turning her head Jade saw a boy standing at the entrance of the door. The very same boy she eyed through her window a week or so ago.
In one hand he held a bowl, and in the other was something that made Jade's blood turn cold.
A knife.
The very same knife that Piper used in an attempt to take her life.
