Calie groaned in pain, trying to get out of bed. "What do you think you're doing?" A sharp voice said and Calie's head snapped up.
It was Aria. "Calie if you wanted help to get up, you could just ask us you know." She said with her a hands at her hips.
"Well? Are you going to help me now?" Calie said, she was honestly fustrated. Ever since that stray bullet hit her in her back, she was confined to a wheelchair. She felt the bullet move every time she moved. She had to get an operation to take the bullet out. But to do that she needed money. Every one was scared to work, the doctors wouldn't come out unless they were paid alot.
One thousand five hundred dollars. That was the amount she needed, but how the hell would she get it... she had no parents, she was under aged and couldn't go to school because of the rise in violence. It wasn't safe for anyone.
"Oh my gosh! Yes!!" Ella yelled excitedly.
"What?!" Calie asked, wanting to know what the fuss was about.
"Me and Nina found a way to get money for your operation."
"Legally?" Aria asked before Calie could respond.
"Yes legally." Ella said.
Aria and Calie breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you guys so much." Calie said, starting to tear up.
"Don't thank us so soon..." Nina muttered.
"What Nina means to say is -Ella elbowed Nina in her rib- it wouldn't be simple."
"Ella, stop sugar coating the damn thing. You get the money if you get an experiment done on you." Nina said, looking at Calie.
Calie's heart beat quickened. "Uh.. what are the side effects?" She asked nervously.
"Unknown." Ella answered.
"No way, not by her self." Aria objected
"That's why we are all doing it. It's five hundred dollars per person." Nina said.
Calie calmed down after hearing that. "Okay, so when is this experiment?
"An hour from now. " Ella said nervously.
*******
"Come on, we're almost there." Ella said, keeping her voice low.The road was dusty and deserted. Anyone who dared to come out there would be sure to have some sort of weapon to defend themselves. Well the four 17 year olds had a knife on each of their person. They walked for thirty minutes until Ella's voice called out, "We're here.
Every one breathed a sigh of relief. Aria pushed Calie towards the door of an old building, It was once a laboratory. They stopped in front of the door. "For Calie." Aria said before putting her hand out.
"For Calie." Nina said putting her hand on top of Aria's.
"For Calie." Ella said mimicking their action.
"Thank you." Calie sniffed.
"Let's go in shall we?" Aria said.
*******
"Hi I'm professor John. Are you here for the experiment?" John asked when they stepped through the door"Yes... we all are." Aria answered.
John's eyebrows shot up, being a little surprised. "Okay. This is a metal detector in front of you I want each one of you to step through it... after you sign the contract," He said, holding a paper out in front of them.
They all signed their name on the dotted line and stepped through the metal detector. But when Calie was wheeled through there was a loud beep.
"Do you have any thing metallic on you?" John asked her
"No but I have a bullet inside me." Calie sighed bitterly.
"Well we need to take it out."
"You do?" Calie said, surprised.
The other girls looked at each other, unsure.
"But when you take out, we wouldn't need the money... so we don't have to do the experiment." Aria said.
"Oh but you will do it, you signed the contract," John said, a bit too smugly. "Follow me please." He said, wheeling Calie into a room.
The rest followed him reluctantly. They entered a room with five metal rectangular tables. "Each of you, lie down on one of the metal tables." He picked up Calie from the wheel chair and carefully laid her on her stomach, onto one of the tables.
The girls noticed that they were straps connected to the table, in the places where their feet and hands would go. Nina, Aria and Ella slowly laid down on their back, on the tables. John strapped in their hands and feet. He started to hook up Aria to a heart monitor when she started to protest. "No protesting." He warned. He hooked up the rest of the girls onto a heart monitor.
"I'm scared." Ella voiced.
"Don't be, it will be over soon." John muttered. He injected each of them and they started to feel drowsy. Each one of them quickly succumbed to the darkness that was lulling them to sleep.
