The Fate of Heroes

Chapter three

Calie lay on the ground in pain, coughing up a little blood, her head was pounding as she tried to get up. Her ears were ringing, that strange sensation of being underwater overwhelmed her as she struggled to breath. She was soaked with blood and she didn't even know if it was hers or not.

"You little kids should not be involved with things that doesn't concern you!" someone shouted angrily.

Calie heard the footsteps louder as the person approached her. Calie wanted to scream, shout, do anything. Her body felt as it was shutting down as she couldn't move, all Calie could do was swallow harshly, trying desperately to also swallow her fear.

The person's footsteps stopped and his figure stood over her body. "Your friends left you, I guess its only you and me." The man smirked.

4 hours earlier

"You guys aren't ready." John said.

"We are we have been training and we have worked really hard." Nina said eagerly.

John looked at each of them, "Nina, you need to learn how to keep your blance, you are so clumsy." John said, before looking at Aria. "You need to control your speed." He earned a pout from her when he said that.

"We are ready, send us out." Ella said, when John was about to open his mouth to say something.

They were all ready after only weeks of training and in John's eyes they were far from ready.

"Alright," John said raising his hands in surrender. "But you have to work as a team."

"Yess!" The girls cheered.

"Have fun dealing with Viper."

At the mention of Viper they all froze. "You are sending us out after Viper?" Ella said in shock.

"You guys wanted to go so bad, so I'm sending you out. You just have to place some C-4's on the foundation of one of his... 'offices'."

"Viper will be pissed." Calie said.

"Yup, just make sure you get out as fast as you can... alive."

Viper was a drug lord know for his cruel reputation. He hunted down the people that owed him money and put a bullet between their eyes, at point blank range.

"Okay in and out... we'll be fine." Calie said, maybe she was reasurring herself more than the others, but she just had a gut feeling that something was going to go wrong.

"Alright gals, suit up!" John yelled before walking out of the room.

They all had to wear a skin tight body suit made especially for each of them. The body suits were black with a strip of color on the sides. Nina had white and black stripes on the side, Calie had dark blue and white, Ella had light blue and red, and Aria had red and gold.

"You guys ready?" John said walking back into the room with a very large bag.

"Yea, what's that?" Aria said, poining to the bag.

"Yeh, just a couple of gadgets,"

The girls' eyes lit up with excitement and anticipation.

"For those who need it, Calie. I'm sorry but your the weakest one so, you need to be able to protect yourself just a bit more than the others."

"Okay so what do I get?" Calie strained a smile, pretending not be be a little disappointed that she was the weakest link of the group.

"You get a shield. It is like a boomerang so don't worry about losing it if you have to throw it," John said pulling out it out of the bag.

It was dark blue with a red and white ring around a white star which was in the middle. When Calie held it in her hands it was cool to the touch and light weighted.

"Now everyone will get a watch to communicate with each other. Just press this button and speak." John said showing them a black watch with silver button.

"Okay so we can communicate with you too, right?" Aria asked, her tone hopeful.

"Yeah.. no. Only one watch will be able to contact me, and I'm giving it to Calie."

"Calie's eyebrows shot up in surprise, "Why me?"

"Well while you might be the weakest of the link, you are very smart and you will all be together because you guys are working as a TEAM. So you will protect each other, especially Calie. If you lose her all hell could break lose and I wouldn't know." John said in a serious tone as he placed a watch on each of their hands, making sure that the special one was on Calie's wrist.

"We will protect Calie, we promise." The other three girls said, looking Calie dead in her eyes.

"I hope so," John muttered. "Okay you will have to walk there--"

"But where would we even know where to go." Nina interrupted

"If you would have let me finish I would have shown you this," John said holding out a small device. "This is a GPS device that is going to help you find the place. It will be attached to Calie's leg, and you guys get closer to your destination, Calie will feel a pulsing vibration that gets quicker as you go. It also tracks Calie, so if you guys lose her, I can find her. But that won't happen. If you lose her you have to find your way back here."

"What!?" Ella yelled.

"But you guys won't lose her. Just in case though," John walked towards Ella. "I put a holographic picture of the way back, but it only works in dire cases... Like let's say you lost Calie, your body temperature and pulse will will be read by the watch and it will pop up."

"So will that work for all of us?" Aria asked.

"No, only Ella." John said looking at each one of them.

"Okay we get it, don't lose Calie and work as a team." Aria said.

"Okay follow me." John said walking out the room, stopping by the exit.

All the girls followed him and looked at them carefully. "Be careful. Calie at the back of your suit is a magnetic hook so you can place the shield there."

"Okay... Thanks John."

"Alright, good luck." John said opening the door and watched as the girls walked out.

Calie didn't believe him, she didn't believe that her friends left her.

"What do we have here." He said kneeling down taking a closer look at her. He looked at her wrist and her leg. He stood up quickly and brought down his foot on her wrist until a crack was heard, breaking the watch.

Tears ran down Calie's cheek as pain shot through her arm. The man did the same to her leg breaking the tracking device.

Calie took a deep and breathed one last word before blacking out. "Viper."
