you pull away from him, smiling because of his genuine compliment. you're not used to getting comments on your appearance, especially positive ones. but hearing taron say anything about you gives you all the reassurance you need.

you sit back, across from him on the other edge of the hot tub.

you compete in a stare down between him. you can somehow feel the love being traded from your dark pupils to tarons.

a buzz jolts you towards the table, and you slide across the tub to reach for it.

you okay? texts madeline.

you sigh and type out
yes

"responding to your boyfriend?" taron teases with one eyebrow raised.
"no. overprotective friends." you reply.
"you're not here alone? that's a shame. i was hoping you could spend some more time over here." he winks at the last part.

"i could try to work something out," he nods. "but the problem, taron, is that they don't know you."

"well of course...we only just got to know each other!" he gestures to the porch.
"no. i mean they don't know that you exist..." you say quietly.
"really? keeping me all to yourself?" he lowers his voice on the last part, attracting you more.
"yeah. i just don't want them to get offended or upset because i'm ditching them for some boy..." you explain.

when you say it out loud, you realize how bitchy you are being to madeline and lily; this was supposed to be a girls trip, but here you are without them...
and taron instead.
shit.

"so am i the 'some boy'?" he smirks, "i thought i'd be more than that by now."
"you know what i mean," you say back.

realizing how in the wrong you are has suddenly put you off. you don't really know what you want right now.

"help, taron. what do i do?" you say with pleading eyes.

you wish he could just make your friends disappear...along with your present anxiety.

taron considers this for a moment. he bites the inside of his cheek, revealing more of his sharp jawline and bone structure.

"facetime them right now. show them me. and just say that you met me just now because i helped you after you fell off your canoe. you're now in my hot tub warming back up. you may stay the night here because it's getting late and dark outside. you say that you'll text them frequently to satisfy them. and if they don't want you to i can turn on my flirtatious self,"

wow. hot and smart, you think.

taron slides over to you on the last part, and puts a hand on your back. your body is still facing the rim of the pool, checking your phone outside of the tub. he on the right to you, and kisses you on the base of the back of your neck.

his touch gives your stomach a flip, like the organs have done a "round robin switch".

"that's good, taron," you say after considering any ways this could go wrong, "ugh. i just wish it could only be you and me, though. i hate worrying about this type of thing."
"it's okay. it will be fine. i'll literally be right here the whole time." he soothes me.

you nod and pull up the app.

Calling Madeline....
"hey, you— wait, where are you?!"
her voice comes out irritated at first, and then heavily concerned.

"i'm fine," you say, "don't freak out. i was canoeing and fell in—" you get interrupted:
"Y/N THERES A GUY BEHIND YOU!!"

you laugh a little, "yeah. i know. i was gonna get to that...anyway, i fell in from trying something dumb, and a guy named taron saw me. he helped me and invited me into his hot tub to warm up, the lake is cold...did you realize that? i didnt."
you say it quickly, which makes it sound less natural.
