Technically, it was never cold in Cuba. Especially the long nights that you decided were great for walks, with the hot sun leaving the air still warm around you. Usually it would cool down at this time of hour, but the heat from earlier that day remained, leaving you feel stuffy once you left the coolness of your house to the heat of night.

You didn't even want to take a walk really, but something told you to. It was as if your whole world could spin around and around before stopping to halt, just for whatever moment waited for you out there.
Fanning yourself with your hand, you headed out, hoping for some sort of moisture that could cool down the air or something.

You made it two blocks before you saw him. His demeanour was at first threatening, since he was leaning up against a wall furiously trying to light a cigar perched in his mouth. You thought about taking another route before he looked up, surprised and a little frustrated.

"Excuse me, I hope I'm not rude, but I can't light this damn cigar! Gotta light?" He asked, his Spanish accent not at all surprising you, but intriguing you all the same.

"Why would you need one? I mean, it's like 86 degrees! Wouldn't you get hot?"

"No, actually it's 67, and why would I?" He said, pressing the tip of the lighter with much force, shaking it again.

You watched him for a second, just to study him. It would make sense for him wearing shorts and a sort of Hawaiian t-shirt, donned with beautiful drawings of Mariposa, but the cigar? You had no idea.

"Well? Do you?" He asked again.

You blinked and shoved your hands in all of your pockets.

"No sorry, but there should be a drugstore up ahead." You replied.

"I don't have any money on me. I just came out for a smoke." He sighed.

"Do you live nearby?" You asked curiously.

"Well, not...exactly." He mumbled.

"Okay well, how about I give you a few bucks to get yourself some matches or something." You said, reaching into your pocket.

He waved his hands and shook his head.

"Nah, your kindness is enough. The name's Carlos Machado, it's a pleasure to meet you Bella." He bowed.

You smiled, and surprised yourself once more for blushing.

"Why, the name's ______, pleasure to meet you Carlos." You curtsied giggling.

There was a silence for a moment as you both studied each other, both blushing.

"Would you...care to come to my place? I mean, I have lots matches." You gestured.

He rubbed the back of his neck and nodded slowly before smiling again.

"That would be pretty great, and...I know this might seem a bit foreword, but thanks for being my light tonight.." He mumbled.

You took his hand and held it all the way back to your house, knowing full well it wasn't about matches anymore.
