Harry, Ron, Hermione and I were in the Room of Requirement, hanging out before the first DA meeting after my encounter with Draco."Gem," Ron says, pulling my head from the clouds. "It's still your turn you know."
"Right, sorry." I clear my throat and scan the board.
"Is everything alright Gem?" Hermione questions. "You seem distracted."
I glance up to find all three of them peering at me and sigh. "I won't be attending Dumbledores Army anymore."
"What?" Harry asks through a look of concern. "Why?"
"Draco reckons Umbridge isn't far from finding out." I say with a shrug.
"So, what does he know? She hasn't found us yet has she." Hermione reasons.
I look at the checkered board in front of me defeated. "He threatened to tell father unless I stop seeing you lot."
Ron scoffs. "The git! He's blackmailing his own sister."
"I'm sorry there's not more we can do." Harry speaks up. "You'll certainly be missed." He sounds dejected.
"Thanks Harry."
Hermione chimes in somewhat hopefully. "Will you still come by before meetings?"
I contemplate. "I'll give it a week or two to properly appease my lesser half, but yeah, of course." Before I can say more the door behind me clicks open, revealing Luna and Cho.
I swiftly get up to leave before the meeting, only for Hermione to grab my arm and spin me back towards her, quickly enveloping me in a hug. She's impossible not to hug back, and much to my surprise just seconds after I hug her another set of arms wrap around the two of us, and then another.
"I've never been part of a group hug before." I observe stupidly, earning a small laugh as we separate. "See you."
"See you later Gem."
Since Dumbledores Army had ended I hadn't spoken to any of its members; Though in every class we share I didn't fail to notice the bandaged hands and gloomy atmosphere.
They'd been caught the Friday after I'd left, and I'd known just before it happened. I hate that I didn't warn them, almost as much as I hate the smug attitude Draco's been carrying with him all week. The only good in the following month was Fred and George quite literally blowing up exams, giving a proper fuck you to Umbridge. It was quickly followed by an ordeal involving some of Dumbledores Army; I only heard small chunks about it from Draco and the goons, who teetered back into the common room looking rather green that evening.
I didn't see any of my friends until late in the afternoon the following day, when I spotted Mr. and Mrs. Weasley in the hall outside the hospital wing, Ron's mom dabbing her cheek with a handkerchief. "I just hope he'll be okay, they've all been through so much."
Terror grips me wondering who they might be talking about. I run the length of the corridor and push past them into the hospital wing. "Ron! Harry!"
The hospital wing is far from empty, but the mood doesn't seem somber at the very least. Ginny and Luna are sitting at the edge of a cot chatting with a tired Neville in the next bed. Ron is giggling quite loudly from a cot near the door, with Hermione sitting at his bedside. "Gem?" Hermione looks at me surprised.
"Oh god, is Ron ok?" I rush to his bed.
"He's fine." She stands and meets me at the foot of his bed. "Madam Pomfrey said he should be back to normal in the next few hours."
"What about you? Are you hurt?" I can't help but grab her shoulders giving a once over for any injuries.
"I'm fine, I promise." She briefly places a comforting hand on my cheek.
Relieved, I turn and scan the rest of the room. "Where's Harry?" I rub the back of my neck worried. "Merlin, Hermione what happened?"
"He's just gone back to the dormitories already, he's not hurt." She takes my arms to stop me looking around. "But his godfather died last night."
My mouth falls open, not sure of what to say. "I didn't even know he had a godfather."
"You'll probably find out in the paper, it was Sirius Black."
"Sirius Black?" Is all I manage to say.
"He was framed of course." She adds. "It's a long story." Her eyes are so tired.
"Looong story." Ron drones in an tone like Luna's.
"Believe it or not he's improved quite a bit." Hermione comments as we look at Ron. My eyes sting, I didn't even know what had happened to him. Someone had died last night, someone Harry had cared about. What if it was Hermione, or Ron, or Harry, or any of Dumbledores Army.
"I'm so sorry." I barely get the words out. My vision of Ron keeps blurring.
"Gem you didn't even know—"
"He was there. Wasn't he?" I ask her, probably too loudly.
After a moments hesitation, she nods sadly. "He was, I'm sorry. Gem..." She pauses again, clearly having something more to say. "Your father was arrested last night."
I take a sharp breath in, not knowing how I was possibly meant to feel about this? I'd give anything to just be upset about it; Hell I'd give anything to be happy about it. Instead I felt frustrated and stupid. "I should go. But tell Harry I'm thinking of him." Her doe eyes sadden but she gives a small nod nonetheless.
Before I can crumble into her arms I force myself to straighten my back and leave. My pace waivers when I see Ron's parents eyeing me concerned, having likely overheard more than I cared for.
The train back to London with Draco was somber. We'd be going home to a quiet house now that father was in Azkaban. Neither of us had heard from mother all month and I hadn't a clue how she was taking it. Draco however had taken it very poorly, as most children would when a parent goes to prison. He'd been quieter than usual, and noticeably bitter.
Mother greets us on the platform with a small terse smile that quickly disappears, and places a hand on either of our shoulders to disapperate. Before she does I find myself suddenly looking around desperately for the others, meeting Harry's eye over my shoulder, exchanging brief hopeful smiles before we're gone.
We land in the foyer together and I struggle to stand, disoriented from disapperating, but find myself quickly distracted from the feeling by the quiet hum of voices coming from the dining hall.
"Draco, Gemini," My mother places her hands back on our shoulders as we stand side by side, facing the closed door to the room. I wanted her to ask how school had been, so I could say fine and she could roll her eyes. "You should know, he's not happy with us. But he's giving us a second chance, you will both do great things for him. We'll all be together again, as families should be." She squeezes our shoulders softly. "Stand straight, we're Malfoys."
With that she pushes us forwards and we enter the large room together. I find my feet unable to move, and my lungs unable to take in air at the sight. The long table where we used to have family dinner was occupied entirely by death eaters and Lord Voldemort, standing at the head of the table. "Ah, Draco, Gemini, we've been expecting you."
