That night Hope made Layla go home, forcing the excuse of Olive needs her down her throat. And unfortunately, she can't argue with Hope.
Suddenly the stars seemed so much duller. It reminded her of the times before I had Hope... those dark days when she looked in desperation. The days where the voices were too much. What could she ever be without Hope? She was her second half, her better side. The only support she ever really had.
The voices surrounded her, taunting her like they always did.
"It's all your fault."
"You focused too much on yourself."
"Selfish."
"You didn't even notice!"
"What kind of a friend are you?"
"How could you let her down like this?"
Layla sighed, looking up at the stars. "Orion is out tonight... but it's not the same without her." she whispered to the night sky.
Days passed and the voices only grew louder, combining with judgment.
Her father's advice was simple. "Suck it up and move on. Don't look for Hope when she's not there."
Her mother was a bit gentler. "You'll be okay, these things take time."
Oliver remained optimistic. "If anyone can beat this, Hope can!"
Kylo offered a shoulder to cry on. "If you ever need anything, I'm always here."
Cameron even offered something she had dreamed of for so long. "I'll go stargazing if you want."
How could everyone act so transparent? So fragile? She wasn't a piece of glass, she wouldn't shatter. At least she wouldn't unless she...
No! Layla didn't even want to think about that. She'll make it! She has to!
Won't she?
Her phone rang, breaking her out of her panic. She froze at the voice. Without any thought she began running, straight to the hospital. That was where she had planned to go in the first place, but quickly got caught up in her thoughts.
She barged into Hope's room. "I'm here! I made it! Can I see her?" she panted.
But the bed was empty.
"I'm sorry... you're too late."
