Precisely twenty years ago...

Hmm... How peculiar, a noble familiar thought to himself while observing his Lord and Master from afar, Master Fu has been reorganizing his things for quite some time.  What is that strange bag he's stuffing common attire in?  Is he preparing for travel?  I have not been informed regarding such plans.  Does he mean to visit another god?  Should I be preparing for travel also?

Just then, the seemingly old Asian man stepped out of his shrine, with his Cherrywood derby cane and the peculiar bag from before in hand.  The familiar set down his washrag and turned to face the old man, bowing slightly in respect to the Land God.  The elderly deity smiled kindly at his familiar, giving the now tamed cat the same smile that made him sense his first feeling of belonging in this divine world.

As the familiar opened his mouth to ask of his Lord and Master's doing, the old Asian man answered his question before it was uttered.

"I'm going into town, Chat Noir," the Land God said calmly, walking down to the shrine's gate, "Make sure you hold down the fort until I get back, okay?"

Putting aside his instinctive curiosity -- he was a cat, after all -- the noble familiar nodded in obedience to his Lord and Master's request, watching tranquilly as the old man passed through the gate and left the shrine.

Unbeknownst to him then, but that was the final time his Lord and Master would ever pass through that gate again...

Present day...

In a rundown and truthfully pathetic house on the far east side of Kawagoe City, just outside the Old Town Warehouse District, a young lady sat beside a short coffee table, shifting multiple quaint yen dollars between her two delicate hands patternlessly.

The young maiden was quite beautiful: fair skin, blue-bell eyes, long silky raven hair, peach pink lips, and rosy cheeks dusted with freckles.  Yes, quite beautiful indeed.  And not just on the outside, one would say.  Marinette Dupain-Cheng was a high school girl with a pure heart, a kind voice, an urge for justice, and an upliftingly happy and encouragingly brave attitude.  But with all that in consideration, it's equitable that her life has always been frustrating, difficult, and stressful.  Especially when it comes to her father, who has always made things even more frustratingly difficult with his careless attitude and unquenchable gambling habits, which therefore led to the poor girl's high stress levels -- that may or may not be taller than the Yokohama Landmark.

It's past nine now, the girl thought, the few yen dollars still shifting between her fingers, I guess he's out gambling again.  His job at the local bakery finished hours ago.  Well, I suppose I should've assumed that was the case.  It was pay day, after all.

"Ugh!  Darn it, Dad!" the teenager yelled at the ceiling -- a common habit of hers when she's frustrated, as you will continue to witness -- "Does this house really need to be in anymore debt?!  At this rate, you're gonna get us evicted, you stupid jerk!!!"

She sighed disappointedly with her finished rant, and wondered once more when her father would be coming home.  But before she could finish said wonderings, there was a hard knock on the door.

The girl gasped at the sudden -- but welcomed -- distraction to her enraged wallowing, than sat up, walked to, and opened the door.  Although her rant from earlier was finished, the teenager was strangely excited to resume it once she saw her father who was at the other side of the doorway.  But unfortunately when she opened the door, her father was not standing in front of her.  For instead, there were three serious lawmen glaring down at her on the porch.
