Chapter 1: Routine
The sun was blinding, even through my dark brown shades. I was at the water's edge, the small warm waves lightly breaking over my toes as I dug them into the warm wet sand. I looked up, the beautiful turquoise was calm and went out for miles with small dips of waves. It was low-tide, and it was amazing. The sky almost reflected the same blue as the ocean. The white sand was hot from the beating sun. I felt my shoulders burning. I decided to go for a swim. I took steps in, the water was like a bath. I floated on my back for a few seconds, then dunked my whole body under the salted luke-warm water.

I opened my eyes, sat up, looked towards the window and laid back down. My warm bed contradicted my cold room. Obviously my paradise was too good to be true. All I wanted to do was go back to sleep, back to the hot beach, white sands and clear blue water. Shit. It was just a dream.
"BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP"
I had woken up before my alarm once again. I heard something clatter to the floor as I tried to reach for my phone. The irritating blaring continued. I looked over my shoulder, then turned around completely to find my lamp on the floor. "Dammit." I swore groggily. I really need to think before acting sometimes. This was the second time in a week that I did the exact same thing with the same result. I picked up my phone and crossed my legs on my bed. The alarm was shut off. 7 am. Shit. I looked at my texts. One from Dai:

U gon b late bitch get ur lazy ass out of bed!! <3
I jumped out of bed, quickly picking up my lamp and putting it back on my bedside table. I wasn't about to be late again. One can only get so many late slips before being forced into detention, and I don’t think I would be able to charm my way out again.
I ran to my wardrobe, quickly finding my underwear, then moving on to the next drawers pulling out a black turtle neck and navy skinny jeans. I ran to the bathroom. I quickly washed my face and brushed my teeth, wet my arms, chest and neck, not having time for a proper shower, probably wetting my pj bottoms whilst doing so. Running back to my room I dried myself with a face towel and closed the door. I went to my little mirror table and quickly did my usual make up. Eyeliner, mascara and my favorite pale pink lipstick that stood out on my caramel skin.
Springing up from my seat I drew the curtains and started stripping off my nightwear. Nothing sexy, as always. Just a t-shirt and baggy pants. I quickly changed, grabbed my bag and went for the door. I locked it, knowing my roach of a brother would surely raid it in my absence. I ran down the stairs to find my mom in the kitchen.
"Sit." She said sternly. Damn. Here we go again.
"Ugh." I slumped over to the island and dropped my bag next to my seat. I sat arms folded, smirking at her with an eyebrow raised. She slid a bowl in my direction.
"Eat." She instructed. I looked into the bowl and sneered. I'm not a big breakfast eater, and I don't care much for pencil shavings in milk.
My mother looked irritated as I hesitated to pick up my spoon.
"Can you just eat your cornflakes?!"
I carefully lifted it to my mouth, cringing as I took a bit. This is disgusting.
"Really Devina!" Ew.. Devina.. Only my mother. She sat down opposite me. I looked up from my bowl of crap to find her wide eyes tentivly looking down at me. She threw me a fake smile. I gave a confused face. She was looking at me as if I had a tooth missing. "What?" She shook her head. This was really starting to piss me off as she was still staring at me. She was studying, my face..?
I put my spoon down and leaned back on my bar stool and put one Van adorned foot on the table top. I stared her down with a raised eyebrow, knowing it would irritate the hell out of her. She finally let out a heavy sigh "Can you please take your dirty shoes off my counter." It wasn't a question. It was a demand. "Gladly." I said smirking, not moving a muscle. She spoke, "Ah well, I was just thinking to myself how interesting you look without all of that metal shoved in your facial cavities."
OFCOURSE. It had to be something to do with a decision made by me that she didn't approve of. Not that she approves any of my decisions. Of which includes me staying with my dad rather than her. A beep from outside came to my rescue and interrupted my about to come up with a witty comeback. Dax and his perfect timing. I then picked up my bag and slung it over my shoulder. Heading for the door.
"HEY." She finger motioned me back to her. I sighed and went back, lightly pecking her on the cheek. I rushed to the door.
"Wait, here take an apple! Bye! Be home by 5:00!" She shouted after me. I ran down the porch stairs to meet Dax.
Dax is one of my best friends that I've known for years. He's bailed me out on numerous other occassions other than this one. Somehow I always find myself in some sort of trouble. We've gone to the same school since we were 7, which is when he involuntarily became kind of like my babysitter. Not that I appointed him. He called the duty on himself despite his constant complaints that he's always running after me. We've seen each other cry and breakdown. Scary enough, we've seen each other naked. Which is an image that I try to keep far from my mind.
"Shit sorry! I was in such a rush today you have no idea! I had to get around my mom, she insisted I sit down and eat something." This was one of the downsides of staying with my mother for the week while my dad was away.
As I ran towards him, Dax looked at me in surprise with widened eyes, "Dude, where are your pants!"
I froze. "WHAT!" I looked down. I quickly found myself flooded with irritation. "Oh fuck you." My eyes narrowed. He’s always messes with me when he knows I’m having the worst of days.
Dax burst out laughing "Your face was priceless! And strange looking. Where the hell is the metal?" He looked at me with a serious face. I ignored his question. The way I wanted to slap that smirk off his face, but I didn’t have half the energy it took for that. Not this early in the morning. I settled for letting out an agitated huff and got into the passenger seat of the car. "You know, seeing as it's not Friday your taking the piss isn't making my mood any better. And it’s way too early for a beating so count yourself lucky."
Dax got into the driver’s side and looked at me sympathetically. "Sorry, forgot that you were with your mom for the week"
"UUGHHH don't remind me…" "Cheer up Dev. Just one more day. And Thursdays aren't that bad." I cocked an eyebrow, "Thursdays tease. And I still have the weekend." I folded my arms and looked forward. It’s extremely occasional that I have to put up with my mom and her ridiculousness. I think it’s pretty apparent that we don’t see eye-to-eye. Dax put the key in the ignition and turned. The engine croaked. He tried again, twisting the key back and forth. The car finally started up and puffed out a huge black cloud from the exhaust. I turned back, then turned to look at him and that sheepish grin on his face.
"Dax, I think this car is done..." I'm sure I told him what he already knew.
