A Long Day

Nothing interesting really happened at lunch. Ivy and her friends never showed up. A lot of the older students were mingling and some people were  even sitting with friends at other tables but for the most part the first years were keeping to themselves. However Erin had no problem skipping over to the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff tables to let their friends know that she had drama to spill at four.

Then eventually the time came to head to Potions Class, in which all three of the Ravenclaw girls were dreading. They made sure to arrive fairly early, in fact when they got to the classroom the door was still closed and Aradine is the only one there waiting, she always seems super cordial.

She nods politely at them, "Are you guys excited for potions?"

Cathleen shrugs, "Honestly, I don't think it could be any worse then History of Magic."

Cleo and Erin both nod in agreement. Quinn and Aadish arrive about a minute later, right before Snape comes barrelling down the hall, robes flying behind him giving him a bat like appearance.

He opens the door for them before saying, "I know there is a muggle phrase, 'the early bird catches the worm' but I must inform you, being early to my class will not earn you any points with me. Now, take your seats."

Cleo took a seat right behind the front row, Erin and Cathleen sitting on either side of her. Aradine looked between their table and the front before finally sitting down in the last chair at their table.

Aadish and Quinn took the table on their right as Snape took his place at the front of the classroom.

Eleanor and Charlotte come in next and grab a table for themselves under Snape's watchful gaze. Milo and Grayson come in, nervously sitting next to Aadish and Quinn. Rebecca comes in and takes a seat next to Charlotte and Eleanor.

Roman Tugwood also comes in by himself, taking a seat at his own table. Garnet and Rosie sit there when they come in.

Then lastly, Wesley and Isaac come in, thankfully not late. Cathleen had a feeling if they were late Professor Snape wouldn't be as considerate as Professor Sprout.

Snape calls roll, sneering when he says her name, only further confirming what she knew. "Potion-making is a delicate art, an exact science not many have an affinity for. There will hardly be any foolish wand waving in my class, so many of you may not even consider it magic. I do not expect many of you to understand the beauty of a simmering cauldron and the power of the liquids it holds. The power to creep through human veins, bewitching your mind and ensnaring your senses...I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, and save those on the brink of death. All this, if you aren't a bunch of dunderheads like most."

Almost every student in the class room visibly gulped. "Can anyone tell me what type of potion Golpalott’s Third law pertains to?"

Eleanor Zhao and Aradine Arterton both raise their hands quickly. Cathleen raises her hand a few seconds later, not as sure of her answer.

Snape ignores her hand, "Zhao?"

"Antidotes, sir."

"Correct. Does anyone know what is the best way to extract juice from the Sopophorous Bean is?"

Again Eleanor raises her hand first, then Aradine. Then Roman, Quinn, Charlotte, and Cathleen raise their hands. This Cathleen remembered reading. This time though, Snape opted to ask someone who hadn't raised their hand. "Walker?"

Issac cleared his throat, "I'm not sure sir."

"Of course not, Bennett?"

Rosie practically jumps a foot out of her chair hearing her name be called, "Um, maybe to crush it sir."

Snape narrows his eyes, "Yes, you Ravenclaws always seem to know the right answers, even when you're just guessing. If I wanted to use an ageing potion to make myself significantly older, what would I do?"

Everyone raises their hand, "Hughes?"

"Yes well, I suppose every potion is different but generally if you wanted to age significantly, you'd drink a larger quantity."

"What type of potion is Weedosoros?"

Eleanor, Aradine, Aadish, Roman, and Quinn all raised their hands. This one Cathleen was not sure of, so she left her hand down and hoped Snape would avoid her. Of course he did not, "Dearborn-Lupin! Care to tell us what type of potion Weedosoros is?"

"I'm not sure Professor."

"Hmm, perhaps you're not as competent as you seem. Open your books to page 14, we're going to begin studying the Cure for Boils, which you will be brewing next week in Double Potions with your Hufflepuff classmates. Next time I ask questions, I expect you to all know the answers."

The class was relatively quiet after that, everyone took notes while Professor Snape lectured about the ingredients, usage and anything you'd need to know about the Cure for Boils potion. He also assigned them homework at the end of class, a foot long essay on what will happen if the Cure for Boils potion is brewed incorrectly. Then thankfully, they had another free period.

They find the library, where they spend the hour looking for charms that they may be able to use on hidden passage door. Aparecium and Revelio are both 2nd year level charms, but they might work, if either of the three girls is able to learn the spell. Cleo still thinks they need to work on learning Alohamora, that it might work if they do it correctly. They get started on their Herbology essays before it's time to head for Transfiguration.

Professor McGonagall had a stern look about her that intimated most students but Cathleen could recognize the softness of the woman's eyes. It was easy to tell she was a teacher who shouldn't be crossed, she made sure they knew that by giving them a stern talking to when they entered her classroom.

"Transfiguration is some of the most dangerous and complex magic you will learn at Hogwarts,” she said. “Anyone messing around in my class will leave and won't come back. That will be your only waring."

Professor McGonagall even gave a demonstration where she turned her desk into a pig and then back. They had to take a bunch of notes before finally she passed out matches for them to turn to needles. Nobody made any real progress on their needles.

Cleo's had begun to change into a silver color and both Roman and Rebecca's had a sharp point by the end of the lesson. Aradine was very frustrated in the fact that her match hadn't really changed but most of the other students shrugged it off, Professor McGonagall had said it'd be difficult.

During their free period before dinner they met up with all their other friends. Erin eagerly told them what had transpired in the corridor after History of Magic. Then they had showed them to the hidden door or passage behind the tapestry. They were all sworn to secrecy of course. And after discussing more possible ways to open the door, they talked about their classes and Cathleen expressed her absolute disdain for Professor Snape. And finally, they decided to head to the Great Hall for dinner.

With promises to meet again tomorrow morning, which thankfully was a Saturday, they split up to go to their respective tables. And after dinner the girls rushed to their common room ready for some much needed shut eye. Half the girls were already in the dorm when the got there, the other half had arrived by the time Cathleen got out the shower. It had been a long first day of classes, meaning they were all asleep before nine o'clock.
