ooo.ROWAN HARGROVE WASN'T INTERESTING. he didn't hold the qualities people thought he would when first meeting the boy but he didn't care. Some people would call him off as annoying and ungrateful but he didn't listen to them , he just acted as if he didn't care. but deep down rowan cared. a lot. after his mother and father split and the mom leaving his dad with full custody of him and his brother , billy , rowan acted out as every other child would. he didn't get in huge trouble at school only detention but that was big enough for his snobby dad to leave red marks and bruises all over his body.
it hurt. a lot. but as he always said... he didn't care , he continued to cause trouble, talk back to his dad maybe even to his stepmom but most of the time he laid off her, and honestly, he felt bad for the women. she was a nice lady who fell in love with a ruthless abusing man. she didn't realize that until she married him but still , she loved him and no matter how hard she tried to not , she still did.
sometimes rowan would take the hits for her when she broke some glass and his dad got pissed out about it. and honestly, rowan didn't care that his father would hit him until he would bleed. as long as it wasn't anyone who didn't deserve it. rowan felt like he did , deserve the pain that he had caused like he was the reason his mother left but he wasn't. his dad just enjoyed telling him he was.
even billy would tell him. billy knew it wasn't true but it was one of the things that helped him feel less of a shitty person. even though it made him look like a shitty brother. he took his father's words that use to be shouted at him and turned them towards his little brother. blaming rowan and maxine for something they couldn't possibly cause. they were just kids.
maxine , rowan's stepsister , felt bad for her mother as well. she wasn't so fond of the whole two new stepbrothers and moving to california for some so-called new start. rowan wasn't either. that was one of the things they had in common , along with all the others that helped them get along from the start ; skateboarding , arcade games but Rowan didn't care so much for them ( even if max was more skilled than him) , they both had a slight interest in horror films , both decent drivers and a secret crush on ralph macchio. max was the only person rowan would try to get along with even though she can be a pain in the ass with her snarky sarcastic comments but she was okay in his opinion. but not okay enough to call her his actual sister. the redhead didn't care even try to push him to.
there were times where rowan was at his worse. he was a shit person to max , billy, and his parents but he honestly didn't care until he realized what he would do or say. but he didn't get why he would feel bad , should he feel awful for the foul words he called his father ? should he hate his father the way he did , wanting to run away and his dad possibly get hit by a car on the way to get the mail ? was he a horrible person for thinking of those horrid things? he asked himself that question every day. rowan felt as if he was becoming his dad just like the way billy did. the way he would snap for no reason , take his anger out on people he didn't even know. he didn't like when he did that. it just made rowan feel like a douche.
when his father decided that they would be moving to hawkins , indiana , rowan lost it. everyone expect susan and neil lost it. they didn't want to move and rowan sure as hell would rather be living in a dumpster than move to hawkins. but his father didn't give a shit. the family packed their bags and left. found a nice place and close school for the kids to go to.
rowan and max weren't very excited to start somewhere new at a school and make friends. max already had her old ones and rowan only had a few but they never stuck around to care that he was leaving. the two didn't know if they were going to make new ones just have zero and get done with the school year. they had no idea they were going to join a whole friend group who knew what the actual fuck was going on in the town.
and rowan sure as hell had no idea he would fall for one of them.
