CHAPTER FOUR: JUST AN ASSHOLE
Rowan breathed a sigh of misery, one he had been holding in since he first got home. His eyes shifted from the ceiling to the clock. Ten minutes was all he had left. Ten minutes until he had his well-deserved peace once his step-mom came with his favorite horror movie from the store. She was grabbing him a copy of Friday The 13th so he and Max had something to do if they were staying in or going trick or treating an hour late.
Because his brother almost murdered the kids, Rowan considered going trick or treating with them to be nice. And maybe hang out for a little. . . Row didn't know when or why he changed his mind about them but it was probably the fact they could've been hit.
Eyes wandering over to a very bored Max who was slumped down on the second couch. Rowan pursed his lips and then sighed trying to catch his step-sister's attention. Rowan let out another long sigh when he didn't earn a glimpse, the second time irritating the redhead.
"What?" She snapped.
"I'm bored," Rowan stated after he shrugged.
Max scoffed, rolling her eyes like usual. "And how is that my fault?"
"I don't know. . . Maybe we could go trick or treating?" Row suggested. He figured that could be one of their plans instead of just watching a movie and being lame. But he mostly wanted Max to bring up her invitation to hang out with Lucas and the rest of his friends so he wouldn't have to.
Max bit the inside of her cheek, looked at the clock, thought for a second, and turned to Rowan with an answer. "I did get invited by those stalkers to meet up with them on maple street. We can go early I guess."
"Wait, so you want to go?" He asked in shock since Max seemed to not want to earlier.
"Yeah, I guess. Maybe it'll make up for Billy trying to run them over." The girl says before getting up and rushing off to her room to get into costume.
Unknowingly, Rowan smiled and ran to his room as well. He changed into his costume and added more to the look in less than ten minutes— he was surprisingly pumped to go get candy with the boys from his school. . . Although he was only thinking about Lucas at the moment, Rowan was still pretty glad.
Halloween was his favorite holiday and he hadn't been all sunshine and rainbows since he left California. The boy decided to try and actually make friends even if it was for 'one night'.
Lucas had been kind ever since the arcade and what he said earlier that day at school pushed Row. Not a lot of people would have said something like that to him. It was kind of. . . heartwarming. Rowan wasn't used to someone going up to him and being as nice as Lucas was, especially after Rowan showed him little attention. The only time the Hargrove kid had that happen to him was from his friend from the old school Rowan went to and that relationship was now long gone because of their move.
