CHAPTER TWO
Beneath the Stars, Above the Shadows

The night had wrapped them in a cocoon of laughter and shared moments, the kind that bound friends together tighter than any words could express. Lucas, Rowan, Max, and the gang emerged from Starcourt Mall, the final patrons to leave as the lights dimmed behind them. The cool evening air carried the echoes of their animated chatter, still buzzing with the thrill of the movie they had just watched.

"That chase scene was insane! Did you see how he jumped over that car?" Rowan exclaimed, mimicking the stunt with exaggerated gestures.

Max rolled her eyes playfully. "Yeah, and you nearly jumped out of your seat!"

Lucas chuckled, his gaze drifting to Rowan who was quietly contemplating their next move. Rowan's thoughts were torn; he wanted to spend the night with Lucas, enjoy a few more stolen moments under the moonlight, but Max's safety nagged at his conscience. She was capable of riding home alone, but the protective instinct in Rowan refused to be silenced.

"Maybe I should ride with Max," Rowan suggested reluctantly, looking to Lucas with a mix of apology and longing.

Lucas understood without words. They had been through this routine before. Lucas would ride home with them, Rowan would ensure Max's safety, and they would reconvene in their thoughts until Lucas went home all alone, where he would call Rowan to confirm his safety.

"Did you see that part where the zombie's head just exploded?" Will exclaimed, his hands mimicking the burst.

"Yeah, that was so gross but awesome!" Rowan replied, his eyes wide with excitement.

Max grinned, nudging Lucas. "And the part where that girl almost got bitten, but then he pulled out that secret weapon? Totally badass."

Lucas laughed, shaking his head. "Man, that was something. I thought she was done for."

As they reached their bikes, the group began to disperse, heading in different directions. Rowan hesitated, glancing at Lucas. He wanted to stay the night with Lucas, but he couldn't leave Max to ride home alone, even though she wouldn't mind. Rowan's protective instincts kicked in, and he knew he wouldn't be able to stop worrying if he left her.

"I wish I could stay the night," Rowan said, his voice tinged with regret. "But I can't leave Max by herself and you know how my dad can be."

Lucas nodded, understanding but clearly disappointed. "I get it. How about we hang out at the park for a bit? You can take me home after."

Rowan smiled, grateful for the compromise. "Yeah, that sounds good. Just a little more time together."

They rode in a group to Rowan and Max's house first, their bikes weaving through the quiet streets. The conversation flowed easily, interspersed with playful teases and jokes.
