I always hated shopping.

Just the entire process of picking things out, trying them on, then having to put back what doesn't fit or doesn't look right seems so exhausting I try my best to avoid it entirely. But, the exception was always the Lightspeed ball. Whether I wanted to or not Skye always made sure to drag me out and get me to try on each dress that caught my eye. I really did appreciate it. Considering both of our moms were gone, mine left and Skye's died when she was very young, it was nice keeping in touch with a feminine experience we didn't get to experience very often. I never got to go to prom. I was homeschooled at Lightspeed and whenever the annual ball came around I used to skip it entirely until Skye and I became friends.

"Alright let us see," Skye yelled, I stepped out from behind the curtain trying to hold the dress above my ankles like she had taught me so I didn't trip, "It looks lovely!"

"It's... pink," I said, almost disgustingly.

"What's wrong with pink?" Dana huffed.

"I just... don't do pink. It would make sense for you to wear it, but you know I never liked pink."

I turned in the mirror to try and see the back side of the poofy dress. Yeah, this was definitely not gonna work.

"Can I try on the silver one now?"

Skye rolled her eyes, "Fine."

I grinned in delight and slipped back behind the curtain to take the dress back off. I hung it carefully on the rack before pulling the desired gown out to examine. It was a gorgeous silver with sparkles all over it, normally something I would never go for. I always used to do black or white plain gowns when I was younger but Skye and Kelsey decided I needed something more... mature.

The dress was low cut, a high slit was cut into the bottom and for once I was excited to show off my fit form. I knew Captain Mitchell would want photos and this was actually a ball I wanted to look back on fondly.

This time when I exited the dressing room everyone gasped. The silver complimented my cool toned tan skin perfectly and my arms looked amazing in the spaghetti strap top. The only drawback was you could see the pale faded scar that covered my right shoulder, if people didn't know I could probably pass it off as a birthmark. Skye met my eyes in the mirror with a questioning look that I brushed off.

"That's definitely the one," Kelsey clapped.

Dana had a tight smile on but I paid no mind, she'd been crabby all day.

I smiled, "Do you think Ryan would like it?"

"Definitely," Skye said, taking her dress option off the rack, "Now hurry so I can try mine on."

I slipped the dress off before carefully hanging it on a rack outside of the dressing room for purchase, Skye slipped in and started getting into her gown of choice.

Dana flipped through a magazine, her hot pink dress had looked strange at first but when she twirled around in it I see why she chose the flowy gown considering she always danced the whole night away.

"So," Kelsey chirped, "Did Ryan really not tell you he was back?"

I smiled, "No, it was a complete surprise. I thought Carter was pranking me."

Dana flipped her page loudly causing Kelsey and I to turn. Does she really have to do this now?

Skye emerged from the dressing room and I wolf whistled at the gown. She always knew the best dresses to pick and never had to try a second one on.
