Cassandra looked taken back. “Wait, what?” she gasped.
“It’s Elijah,” Oliver repeated.
Cassandra shook her head and tried to pull Oliver away. "It’s not the Elijah we used to know anymore, we have to kill him he's a zombie!"
“No, Cass, he’s not a zombie,” Oliver clarified.
Cassandra gently laid a hand on Oliver’s shoulder. “I know his death has been hard on you, but we all saw him get bitten,” she said softly.
Oliver brushed Cass off.
"No really it's him look" he gestured towards the figure laying on the cold ground and Cass knelt down until she was centimetres away. She examined the body. It had blue-tinted skin and mud smeared across its face and body.
“His skin is blue, Oliver, he’s gone.”
“I expected more from you, Cass. Think,” Oliver told her, “It’s been raining and it’s cold outside, what happens to people who are wet and cold?”
“Hypothermia,” she remembered.
Wait, she thought, how could something dead have hypothermia?
"If he actually isn't a zombie and he actually has hypothermia we need to get him warm, fast!" Oliver said.
“But what if he is a zombie! If we bring a zombie inside then we could kill everyone else,” Cass argued.
“Sometimes you need to take chances. All options come with consequences. Now either help me get him inside or stand here and watch him freeze to death."
Oliver grabbed Elijah's stone cold body and hoisted him over his broad shoulder. Cassandra stood still, unsure of what to do for a moment before running ahead towards the cabin. She swung the door open, causing Piper, Damien, Erin and Kiara to jump in surprise.
Piper stood up form the couch. “Cass, what happened?” she asked, obviously concerned.
“It’s Elijah, he’s here,” Cassandra tried to explain quickly.
“What do you mean ‘he’s here’? Like, as a zombie?” Kiara questioned, startled by the news.
“I-I don’t know,” Cassandra replied.
“How do you not know?” Erin shouted.
Cass was cut off by Oliver charging through the still opened door, Elijah was lying motionless over his shoulder.
“Get all the blankets! Boil water or something! Get anything warm! And some dry clothes!” Oliver called frantically.
“Isn’t he a,” Damien started to say but choked on his words. He took a deep breath. “Isn’t he a zombie though,” he breathed.
“I don’t know,” Oliver admitted.
The group appeared skeptic. “Should we really be bringing him inside?” Kiara asked.
“Go,” Oliver demanded.
Everyone stood and scrambled around in a chaotic manner. Oliver carefully laid Elijah down on the old couch.
Oliver gently squeezed Elijah’s leather clad shoulder. “Hang in there, buddy."
Cassandra came bounding down the stairs holding all the blankets she could find. She passed them to Oliver and watched intently as he wrapped them around Elijah. Then, Damien ran down the stairwell wrapped only in a threadbare blanket and holding dirty, yet dry, clothes.
