Erin woke up early and decided to step outside for a breath of fresh air. Sitting on the porch was Kiara who was staring out into the forest blankly.
“What are you doing up so early?” Erin asked and sat down next to her.
Kiara shrugged without even turning to face her friend. She looked down and picked at her fingernails.
Erin was taken back by Kiara’s lack of words. “Hey, is everything alright?” she asked softly and put a hand on Kiara’s shoulder gently.
Kiara still said nothing but she shook her head. Erin pulled her into a hug and tears began to fall from Kiara’s eyes and soak into Erin’s t-shirt.
“What’s wrong, Kiara?” Erin asked worriedly.
No response.
“Kiara, tell me. What happened?” Erin said and pulled away from Kiara to look her in the eyes.
Kiara sniffled lightly. “It’s just everything,” she said.
“What do you mean?”
“I miss my family. I don’t know where they are or if they’re even alive. Where did that blood stain at my house come from? What happened?” Kiara explained. “I want to know so badly. Yet, I really don’t want to because I don’t wanna find out that my family is dead.” Tears streamed down her face and left wet tracks across her round cheeks.
“None of us know what happened to our parents,” Erin said.
“How is the fact that no one else knows where their parents supposed to comfort me?” Kiara snapped. She turned away from Erin and faced the sky. “You know my mama used to tell me to pray to God every night and thank him for all I have. I haven’t prayed since this all started because what do I have to thank him for? The death of hundreds of innocent people?
“Is God even real? If God were real, why would he kill so many people and spread such a terrible virus? Why wouldn’t God stop the killing? If God is real then he is a killer and I will never pray to someone who kills in cold blood.”
Kiara stood abruptly and walked to stand away from the cabin. She glared up at the sky with wet, red eyes. “If you’re up there, God, I hate you!” she shouted. “I hate you, I hate you, I hate you,” she screamed over and over again. “Give me my family back! Give me my life back!” Her body quaked with anger and sadness. She spat on the ground and faced the sky again. “Come at me, God.” She held her arms out wide. She waited for a few moments and nothing happened.
A zombie, attracted by Kiara’s screaming, wandered out of the forest. Kiara pulled a pocket knife from her jeans and stabbed it through the creature’s eye. She stabbed it repetitively, taking out her hurricane of emotions on the body.
Erin only stood back and watched as Kiara sobbed and mutilated the zombie. After a while, Kiara collapsed on top of the body. Her dark hair formed a curtain and covered her face from view. Erin had never witnesses Kiara in such a state. She was usually carefree and bubbly but right now she looked exhausted, both mentally and physically.
Erin wanted so badly to comfort her somehow but she wasn’t sure how. She feared she would say the wrong thing and make her feel worse but she also knew she couldn’t just leave Kiara alone.
“This whole thing can’t actually be real, can it?” Kiara questioned. “This all has to be some twisted dream and I’m going to wake up and it will all be alright.”
Erin slowly approached her. “Kiara, this is real. I know you wish it wasn’t, but it is somehow. I wish I could tell you where your family is and what is happening but I don’t know either."
"You know, my dad stayed home because of me. I needed him to drive me to this art expo right after school. If it wasn't for me, he would've been safe and far away but now he could possibly be the walking dead."
Erin knelt down next to Kiara. "There are two possibilities, either your family is out there, worried about you and search for you or they are in heaven looking down on and protecting you,” shes told Kiara gently.
Kiara squeezed her eyes shut as drops trickled out of her eyes and down her cheeks. “You always hear people say that they’re ready for a zombie apocalypse but I wasn’t. No one really is. Just a month ago I was thinking about how I couldn’t wait to move out and become independent from my parents but now I know that I’m not ready to be alone.”
“You’re not alone. God is here with you and he loves you. And I’m here too, and I’m not planning on leaving,” Erin assured her.
“If God does even exist, he will definitely send me to Hell,” Kiara said sadly.
Erin’s expression became confused. “What, why?” she asked.
“I’ve killed and killing is a sin.”
“So? You needed to do it, plus God has killed far more than you and he is still holy,” Erin pointed out.
“But I am no god. I am just a scared girl facing the seemingly impossible who isn’t sure what on earth she’s supposed to do or not do.”
“No, you’re a strong woman who is figuring this weird life out as she goes along.”
Erin stood up and reached her hand out for Kiara to take. Kiara hesitantly grabbed it and was pulled up by Erin.
“We’ll face this whole thing together,” Erin told her.
Kiara wrapped her arms tightly around Erin’s body. “Thank you for always being there for me and dealing with me when I’m crazy.”
“I know you would do the same for me,” Erin said.
Kiara looked up at Erin. “Pinky promise?” she said and held out her pinky finger.
“Pinky promise what?” Erin asked confused.
“That will face this whole thing together,” Kiara clarified.
Erin linked her pinky with Kiara’s. “Pinky promise.”

A/N: Hello! This book is nearly at 1.4k reads (THANK YOU SOO MUCH!) and I would like to apologize in advance if any part of this was somehow offensive although I actually did do my research and in the bible God killed over 2 million people, however none of this was meant to bash any religions or beliefs, it was simply made to show the struggle that some people may go through in such a situation and I think that religion is a major thing that people may question so yeah
