The group awoke to a pale pink sky. The sun was just starting to rise but the tall trees surrounding the cabin blocked out most of the morning light. Dew was sprinkled over the tree tops and the grass.
The seven teenagers gathered in the kitchen.
"Breakfast is served," announced Elijah in a terrible french accent as he placed the plates in front of the others.
A slice of bread and a mysterious canned substance sat in front of each of them.
Cautiously Erin prodded the strange mush with her fork. She took a tentative bite and was surprised that it didn't make her throw up.
"What is this even?" Piper asked.
Elijah shrugged. "I think it's canned ham or something," he replied.
"It's surprisingly not that bad," Kiara chuckled, "My mom has made worse."
The joke fell flat though as they all reflected on their missing and possibly dead parents.
"I know what we're all thinking right now, but I'm sure all our parents are fine, they probably heard about the outbreak and were forced to evacuate," Cassandra commented, trying to lift the others spirits.
"Yeah and as soon as the government and the scientists figure this whole thing we'll all be reunited," Piper agreed.
"My mom's a scientist," stated Kiara staring at her food and not making eye contact.
Piper sighed. "I just wish I could call my parents, just to know that they're alright but I left my phone back at my house," she said. Her shoulders slumped slightly.
Damien wrapped an arm around her, trying to comfort his sad friend. Piper rested her head on his shoulder and sniffled.
Elijah fidgeted with his fingers and tears were dripping onto his fingers He wiped under his eyes quickly and tried to blink back his tears.
"Are you alright?" Cass asked, worried about the crying boy.
Damien rubbed Elijah's back soothingly. "Go lie down on the couch for a little bit, Elijah," he said.
Elijah nodded and rose, his chair made an awful screeching sound as it pushed across the floor. He walked quickly out of the room.
"It's his parents," Damien told her in a hushed tone. "He had a single mother, but she died in a car crash when he was 13. He's lived with his older sister Veronica ever since," Damien explained.
"Oh god, that's awful," Cassandra gasped and covered her mouth with her hand.
She followed Elijah out into the other room.Gently, reached towards him and pulled him into a hug in an attempt to comfort his sadness. "I'm so sorry," she whispered to Elijah.
He buried his head in the crook of her neck and released a choked out sob. Slowly, he took a deep and shaky breath. He detangled his arms and separated from the hug. Elijah wiped the remainder of his tears away. He left the room and went upstairs to compose himself.
Cassandra joined the others back in the kitchen. They sat for a moment in silence, they exchanged glances and looked at the canned ham that almost looked as awful as they now felt.
