During this plague that's sweeping through the poor, I'm lucky enough to have been working under my master. Him, his wife, and their two lovely teenager daughters, are as nice as someone can be to a mere servant. I live a quiet life of waking up before the sun, and go sleep after noon, like most of the other servants here. My master is a wealthy man, whose house lacks nothing. And for the prosperity this family has met over the last decade, we have to thank all but for one thing. A head. Well, to be frank, a deal with one. My master somehow got into a forceful deal between him, and the infamous headless rider, the latest being the forced one.
The details are unknown to me, but all of us here are blessed to be here at this time, for else chances of a better future, or even a tolerable one, would be smithereens. All I know is that the body of the headless rider is serving under my masters rule while his head is well, sitting in the office. Yep, we have a talking head inside an office. The headless riders office. Not everyone is allowed to enter, but most don't want to even pass by the room. But that changed one day, when our masters orders were crystal clear.
-I ordered for that room to be spotless! And even though our best maids took their turns in it, the bloody room still reeks!
Our master has gathered all of us maids and servants, voicing his vexation. Our oldest head maids had put their all into the cleaning of that room. The place has never been more clean! Yet, it stings. No one was able to find the source. And none of the maids want to get close, much less have to clean it again. Not to mention the feeling of two eyes watching your every move.
-I have had ENOUGH! From now on, every maid is to clean that room, again and again and again! Till that stench is gone!
Among the protests and whines and twiddling hands, a steady one reached out, and came forward.
Mine.
-I volunteer.
-You do? I mean, that's great and all, but no one is willing to go through with it. Why are you?
-I think I know what's the problem, and I am certain I can deal with it.
-Very confident, aren't we, Y/N? No matter. But as I see no one else is that willing, name your reward. Certainly there has to be something you are after?
-Well, I want to make a deal. I've ask you countless times to change my shift to evening until early morning, yet you refused. If I manage to get rid of the smell, I want that to be my reward. I want to work the night shift.
-Clever move. Fine. You have yourself a deal, Y/N. I know you're excellent at anything once you put your mind to it, but I still can't get why you insist on that night shift. Every single member in this house recognizes you for your work and friendliness, especially my daughters. You have served us well for the past three years, not once disappointing. Don't do it now.
-Yes, Master. May I request that I begin at midnight?
-Why is that?
-It wouldn't do to have a severed head in window view at the mayor's office, would it?
-I guess you have a point. Okay. You have one night only. Use your time wisely.
I nod my head in satisfaction with the deal I managed to pull through. I may not have any enemies here, among friends and family, but I bloody hate people in my way when Im working, cause if I stop, I know it'll take forever for me to start again once we start chatting. It's afternoon now, so I have plenty of time to prepare. I have an idea of what the problem is, and I plan on preparing accordingly. And since I'll be up all night, there's some time to spare to a nap as well! Gods, I love my naps.
