We walk out and sit in the chairs. The principal gets up and closes his door.

Nathan: Fuck Fuck Fuck No No!

Nathan is in distress. He's acting like he's about to die or something. I put my hand on his lap.

Jaden: You'll be fine it was just a little scuffle. Your parents will understand.

Nathan: My dad is going to murder me! One he's gonna be upset that I got suspended, two I might get benched from the football team, and three this is gonna be on my permanent record.

Jaden: Oh... Well, look at it this way. If you do something nice for somebody, the universe will repay you and I thank you very much for defending me. You really didn't have to do that.

Nathan: Yes I did Jaden. It's my role as your

Nathan *mouthing*: Boyfriend

Jaden: Well my role as your

Jaden *mouthing*: Boyfriend

Jaden: Is to make you happy. If you get in trouble that sucks but I'll be here for you.

Nathan: Well I don't even know about that. He's probably gonna take my phone.

Jaden: Damn. I'll try to find a way, I promise.

I hear footsteps coming down the hallway. It's Mel?

Mel: Ms. Shanell told me to give your guy's stuff back.

She hands us our book bags and MacBooks.

Jaden: Thank you-

She walks away before I can even finish my sentence.

Nathan: What is her deal?

Jaden: I don't know, I think she's just shy?

The principal walks out of his office.

Principal: Nathaniel come with me. Your father is at the front office.

He gets up and walks with the Principal. I waved him goodbye. I hear yelling at the front desk. Maybe he wasn't exaggerating- Nathan and his father walk out of the school building into their 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class.

-In their car-

Mr. Runt aka Nathan's Father: Are you serious Nathaniel, fighting?

Nathan: I was defending someone.

Mr. Runt: Defending who?

Nathan: One of my homies.

Mr. Runt: So you weren't particularly in danger?

Nathan: No, but I couldn't just sit there and watch him get beat up.

Mr. Runt: How scrawny is this "homie," that he couldn't defend himself?

Nathan: He's not scrawny Brandon was just a bigger guy.

Mr. Runt: Wait, Brandon? You punched Brandon in the face? You're on the same football team, you know how much tension that's gonna cause and not to mention he's black!

Nathan: What? What does his race have to do with anything?

Mr. Runt: How is it going to look like a white guy punching a black guy in the face? Especially in this "Black Lives Matter" sensitive age.

Nathan: Nobody is even gonna think that.

Mr. Runt: This can tarnish your reputation. You could lose potential scholarships!
