Chapter 3
Helena’s POV
I’m walking through the park, my park. I sigh and sit down on the swings. I feel the tears spilling over as I clutch my stomach, I’m in pain. I look around; the sun is setting and as the orange light falls on me I realize that I’m alone, I’ve always been alone. I sigh, and I begin to scratch. The dull pain becoming more and more pronounced in my arms as they start to bleed. You’re a pussy you can’t even control your pain, my head mocks me. No wonder nobody loves you. I hear footsteps behind me but I don’t care. I’ve been hurt enough already, they can’t do anything to me.
“Are you ok,” a low masculine voice asks me.
I look up and see beautiful gray-green eyes. I hear him gasp as he picks up my arms, still bleeding. He puts on a smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes, “My name is James, and I think you should come with me.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“LEEEENNNNAAAAA” My eyes fluttered open and I saw James with a piece of toast in his mouth. I sat up and stretched. I winced slightly at the tightness in my side. “Get changed goofy, we’re going to the park today!”
I smiled, but then a thought came to me, “What about school?”
“Babe, its Saturday where’s your head,” he asked tapping my temple.
“Oh, duh,” I said standing up. “Well I’ll be right back,” I said slapping his butt on the way out. I heard him chuckle as I ran up to his room. Stripping out of my clothes from yesterday, I began to search his room for a pair of sweats and a t-shirt. When I found what I wanted I dressed and went down stairs.
“Nice clothes,” I heard James say when I entered the kitchen. I smiled, the boy’s gonna be a flirt? Two can play at that game.
“Yeah,” I whispered getting close to his face, “They look better off.”
I heard him gasp and when he pulled me close I felt his . . . “evidence.” Fighting a smile I wrapped my arms around his neck and put my forehead on his. He closed his eyes and pouted a bit. I blew a raspberry on his cheek and his eyes snapped open, “Not fair Helena, so not fair.”
I smiled and winked detaching myself from him, “You know you love me, get over it.” He smiled and turned away. I picked up a granola bar off the counter and began to walk outside. “Come on, you promised the park.”
“Calm your tits I’m coming.” I was already in the car and tapping my fingers impatiently while when he started the car. I turned on the radio and began singing. “If you can wait till I get home then I swear to you that we can make this last if you can wait till I get home then I swear come tomorrow this will all be in our past well it might be for the best” I saw James turn down the volume a bit but I didn’t care. This was my favorite song. “And hey sweetie, well I need you here tonight, and I know that you don't wanna be leaving me yeah, you want it, but I can't help it. I just feel complete when you're by my side, but I know you can't come home till they're singing-” my singing was cut off by James screaming the bridge.
“La, la la la, la la la, TILL EVERYONE IS SINGING.”
I only then realized that we were parked and he was waiting for me to get out. I looked around and saw people staring at him as if he had three heads. I laughed and got out of the car. “Babe, stick to drawing,” I said winking at him as I ran to the swings. I could hear his foot falls behind me as he ran and I closed my eyes to the world, enjoying the feeling of the air. That is of course, until I ran into the swing set. “Ah, crap,” I muttered holding my throbbing head, “stupid pole.” I heard laughter next to me and looked down to see a boy about five years old. I smiled and the squinted my eyes playfully. “Hey, what’s so funny?” I saw him lock up in fear as I crouched down to his level. “Uh, well, uh,” he stuttered, “you fell, and uh, I’m sorry,” he whispered looking down. His blonde hair stuck up in a messy array and his big brown eyes were looking everywhere but me. I giggled and his eyes met mine. “Its cool kid, but you’re gonna have to let me push you on the swings,” I said in a business-like tone. He nodded vigorously as a smile spread across his face. This is why I love kids, they’re so innocent, and they never have to deal with drama. I looked up to see James watching us from a bench like a parent, and then a thought occurred to me. “Hey kid, where’s your mom?” I asked as I pushed him. He tensed up again but started to look. He pointed over to a boy with dark hair in a beat up leather jacket who was looking at us, “My name is Ian, and that’s my brother, Aig.”
“I’m Helena, and that guy over there is James,” I said.
“You have a boyfriend,” Ian asked eyes wide with shock.
I laughed, “No silly, boys have cuties, but he’s my best friend.” I rolled my eyes at the little flip my heart did when I said that. He let out a sigh of relief and then gasped, “HEY, I don’t have cuties! Girls have cuties, YOU HAVE CUTIES.”
“No, I got my cutie vaccination, I’m clean,” I laughed still pushing him but I felt someone’s intense gaze on me. I shifted uncomfortably as I looked up. Aig was staring at me with a disgusted look on his face, typical. I slowed Ian down, but before he could protest I said, “I think it’s time for you guys to go, but I’ll see you around alright?” I picked him up and he cried out, “OWWWW!” I put him down lightly and looked at him, “Are you okay? What’s wrong,” I looked at his arm and saw a bruise covering a large portion of it. He looked at me with fear in his eyes, and I heard footsteps behind me. Turning around I saw Aig and James jogging over to us. “Hey buddy, what’s wrong?” I heard the former ask in a deep but soft voice. I saw Ian fumble for words as recognition crossed Aig’s face. I looked over at James to see if he noticed but he just shrugged. “You fell, didn’t you,” he asked in a slow voice. Ian nodded very slowly and suddenly it clicked. “James, play with Ian. Aig, can I have a word with you?” James nodded and started to lead Ian over to the slides. “Uh, hi,” I heard him say behind me. I turned and crossed my arms. “He. Did. Not. Fall.” I said through gritted teeth. Aig’s eyes widened and he took a step back. “Who the hell do you think you are?”
“I think I’m pretty damn pissed! A fall won’t bruise your arm! My question is who do you think you are?”
He looked taken aback for a second but he slipped and unreadable mask on. “Listen sweet cheeks, I’m his brother, and I think I can take care of him better than some stranger at the park. How do I know you didn’t do that,” he asked poking me in the chest
That’s it. I grabbed his hand and put him in a Citizen’s Arrest, “My name is Helena, I would never hurt a child, and obviously, you’re doing a shit job.” He tensed and pulled out of my grasp. “Look. I don’t know what I did to piss you off so much, but you don’t know me. You’re probably some spoiled bitch who thinks they know everything. Well you don’t.”
I clamped my mouth shut and balled my hands into fists, count to ten Helena, just count to ten. I exhaled slowly, and looked him right in the eye. “Aren’t we a hypocrite? Listen, I don’t care what you do. But I hope you get his arm checked out. There’s a hospital down the street, I know one of the doctors. Just ask for Shane Duncan. He’ll get him fixed up.” With that I turned on my heel and marched over to James.
“Ian it’s time for you to go sweetie,” I said calmly as soon as I was within earshot. He looked up and nodded sadly. I sighed and shook his hand, “Take care of your brother, you’re definitely the brains of the family.” He smiled and waved to James. I sat on the slide and sighed. James sat down next to me. “Another exciting day at the park; come on, let’s go swing and then I’ll treat you to some ice cream.”
I smiled and leaned my head on his shoulders, “You realize, that my life would suck without you right?” He chuckled, “Yeah, you’re pretty important to me too.”
“But not as important as llamas,” we said at the same time.
“Jinx!” I called as I raced to the swings. I looked down and saw something shining in the mulch. “Ian McCoy, what cancer cannot do - ” I gasped and put it in my back pocket. I think I just made a huge mistake.
