Chapter 2
James POV
I shifted slightly in my chair as I watched Helena eat her ice cream. Her once bright eyes seemed somewhat glazed over. I knew she didn’t sleep at all last night, and what happened this morning didn’t help her either. I closed my eyes and a flash of red came across them. I groaned internally. Really, now is not the time for a flashback. I shivered slightly and took a bit of her ice cream.
“Hey, fat ass, hop off my Pinkberry or else,” she said staring off into space. I chuckled and took another spoonful. Right as I was about to put it in my mouth, however, she pushed my hand causing the ice cream to go everywhere.
“Told you,” Lena said smiling, “Never touch a fat girl’s ice cream.”
“You’re not fat.” I mumbled, rolling my eyes.
This time she rolled her eyes and handed me a napkin. Taking it I slyly observed her arms. Not much damage there, but I knew better. After wiping off my face I stood up and threw the napkin out. On my way back I saw a small purple mark by her jaw line. I clenched my teeth and sat down. As I was reaching out to touch it she tensed up. “You missed a spot.” I heard her suck in a breath, “Damn it, I thought I got it all.” She was scared, I could tell, but she put on a brave face. “You don’t have to do that around me. I know you’re afraid. I swear I would make you stay with me if I could,” I winced slightly at my own words, “but right now you have to keep yourself safe.”
Lena let out a sigh and looked me directly in the eye. “You know that nothing will change right? I have enough evidence but they know me. They know us. We’re not to be trusted and even if I did show them, they would blame. . .” she trailed off, but I knew who she meant. Me. I felt my stomach tie in a knot. I would never hurt her. Never in a million years. I closed my eyes and put my head in my hands, the flash of red came back, followed by the blue. I was running like my life depended on it, because it did. I reached a gate and climbed over it effortlessly. I was going to make it. “James, what did you do,” I heard the soft voice ask from behind me. “Helena . . . I . . . I’m sorry.” I snapped open my eyes and saw her shake out her black and blue hair. I felt a small smile play at my lips. She always did that when she was tired. She stood up and threw out her empty carton. Sighing she sat next to me and leaned her head on my shoulder. I let her lay there knowing she was at least safe with me right now. Her breathing became steady and low as she fell asleep. I picked her up bridal style and carried her out to the car, attracting a few stares. I rolled my eyes, as if I cared. She moved slightly when I laid her down but remained asleep. I made my way over to my brothers. Helena needed some sleep, on a bed in a home, where she was wanted.
When I got there I walked up to the door and knocked. Please be home, I begged internally. Soon enough the door opened to a boy a few inches taller than me with light brown hair and gray-green eyes to match my own.
“Shane, hey, can you do me a favor,” I asked looking at my shoes. I heard a sigh and I looked up.
“What did you do this time,” he asked.
“Nothing, I have Helena with me. She has new bruises, maybe a cracked rib – she winced when I hugged her. But mostly she needs to sleep. Can I bring her in?”
I saw his eyes shift to my car and Helena’s sleeping form. He turned back to me, nodded and then walked in to the house. I opened the door on Lena’s side and carried her in. Shane was a doctor; he would bandage her up good. I put her on the couch and her eyes flew open. She narrowed her eyes surveying the area. She looked at me and the confusion left her face. “Shane’s house,” I said. She nodded and started to get up. I laughed and pushed her back down. “No, honey you’re tired. Go to sleep, listen to your iPod, just don’t get up you’ll hurt yourself.”
She smiled, “Sure Dad, whatever you say.”
I winked and went to find Shane. He was already in the kitchen looking for some painkillers. I smiled, “She won’t take those. She’ll say she’s strong enough to handle it.”
He sighed and shook his head, “I know. She really needs to tell someone. I know why she doesn’t but she should.” He took two out for good measure. “Try to slip them into some apple sauce or something.”
I nodded, “I’ll just tell her they’re happy pills and if she doesn’t take them she won’t get to go to the park tomorrow.”
Shane rolled his eyes and walked out. I followed suit and saw Lena sprawled on the couch sleeping. I chuckled and shook her slightly. “Go away, I’ll feed you tomorrow.” I shook her again and she fluttered her green eyes open. She groaned and sat upright.
“Happy pills,” I said handing her the painkillers. She eyed them warily, “If you take them I’ll take you the park tomorrow.” She smiled.
“Our park, the one with the racing slides?”
I smiled, “Yeah our park, now take these.”
she scrunched up her nose but took them anyway. Soon enough she fell back asleep as Shane started to check out her bruises. I felt the rage growing within me so I excused myself and went to punch a wall. Why her? She never did anything wrong! I sighed and sat on the floor of my room (well the guest room.) I reached over and grabbed the pad I kept underneath the bed. I closed my eyes and saw Helena, the first day I met her.
I sighed and began to draw.
